If you're running XP, you can use System Restore to put it back into the condition it was in before the changes were made, as long as you haven't disabled the restore function previously.

go to start...run... type in sfc /scannow and hit enter...that will run windows file protection. After that I would run System restore.
If at first you don't succeed; call it version 1.0

You may need to reinstall windows. It sounds like some spyware wiped out the .exe file extension preference. You could also try to repair explorer.

One other thing you could try before reinstalling windows:

Since it's a Win98se PC, you can press F8 during bootup, and select "command prompt only", then when you get the command prompt, type "scanreg/ restore" (without the quotation marks, of course). From the selections of previous dates it gives you, choose a date to restore the registry from, preferably the last known working date. Let it do its thing, and then reboot. This has worked for me in the past, no guarantee, but worth a try if you're going to reinstall Windows anyway.

  8. I tried to reinstall explorer no success. I tried the command prompt the first date it gave me was 27 of may then it said cnnot restore...then I tried 28 same 29 same(cannot restore.)

Does that mean that my only solution now is to reinstall windows???

Anybody knows anything else that might work or even of a very good computer help website???
    Thanks in advance!
