  1. I'm ready to buy a dvd-writer and have decided on these 2 models. I'm just wondering which one do you recommend? And, what else should I consider, including possibly adding more ram?

I've got a 1.4GHz AMD Athlon running Win XP Pro with 256 MB of DDR Ram. I've got a 40GB hard drive with about 22 GB of free space.

Get the LG if you need DVD-RAM burning support. If you don't use DVD-RAM, then which ever is cheaper. I have the NEC 2500, and love it.

You need more RAM, a couple of large hard drives, and a faster CPU wouldn't hurt either.

  3. Thanks for the reply. Wish I could get a brand new computer, but I'm just gonna have to go with buying the extra ram along with the writer for now.

  5. Yeah, I checked out that site, but I live in Canada and we don't get those fortunate prices those in the States get. I'll be forking out between 110-130, which is pretty cheap.

    :/

I must disagree with that. I have a 1.4 GHz Celeron, 384 MB of PC100 RAM, and I can still do a fair about of multitasking while my burner burns away at 8x without any buffer underruns (I monitor the light, the realtime Nero speed indicator, and the fact that it takes only 8:30 for a full 4.38 GB burn).

Systems nowadays are waaaaaaaaay overpowered for what most people need. There is no need whatsoever to have that much muscle for something like DVD burning.

    I have a 1.5 P4, 1.7 celeron, and some other under 2gig CPUs.

As stated above, a faster CPU WOULDN'T HURT. It sure wouldn't hurt me if I had faster CPUs

The programs I use won't even load with 384mb of RAM. I'm stairing at ProCoder using 530mb right now. Forget trying to load a 2400dpi TIFF file.

Then again, if all I did was DVD2One or DVDShrink, then I'd be happy with an underpowered ram starved system too.
