Hi, I was originally told that a .vob file is the same thing as an .mpg file but with a different extension and that by just renaming the file to mpg would enable me to play it in any media player which was true...

However, I discovered when I tried to drop that newly renamed file onto a Vegas timeline, it ONLY took the video and not the audio. Next I found out this was because a VOB is NOT exactly the same as an MPG, but contains extra "stream stuff" that is related to the DVD that it came from.

If this is indeed true, is there a way to remove that extra "stuff" from the vob and then rename it to mpg and be able to open up both the video and audio in Vegas without doing any actual "conversion" ?

Please let me know if my question is unclear and I'll try to clarify..

    Thanks

You can demux a VOB to its elementary streams - ReJig, VobEdit are two tools that comes to mind... And beat the one who told you a VOB can be made into an mpg by just changing the file extension hard over the head with a stack of 50 DVD-Rs!
What you'll get after demuxing is the video as m2v (mpeg2 video) and audio as AC3 and/or LPCM (wav) and/or mp2 (mpeg2 audio) and possibly some subtitle stream(s).

Thanks for the reply, I just found a program that does what I need. It's called womble mpeg video wizard...With it, you can open up a VOB and export it to a standard .mpg that I can open up in Vegas to edit. The nice thing about it, is that it will leave the video stream alone and convert the audio from ac-3 to whatever (wav, mpeg audio) and multiplex the file into one mpg program stream. I could not find any other program that could do this...With vobedit, you have to demultiplex and then use yet another program to convert the AC-3 to wav and then multiplex it back together,,, this one does it all, in one step too!

  4. I tried importing the vob to womble and saving as mpeg..it did it in very little time but when I tried to play back the mpg it gives me an mpl error and gives a couple dll files it says it can't load properly I've captured video straight to mpg and authored that way but I've never copied from a dvd before...perhaps i'll try to demux using vobedit..
