  1. What’s a good program to remove subtitles completely, from an AVI clip?

  2. If they're permanent subs (hard coded) onto the video the way they are with oh say... Naruto then you can't

If they are a separate stream muxed within the AVI then you could either use AVIMux GUI or VirtualDubMOD to delete the stream.

If they are permanent subs and you REALLY want to remove them, then you could trim the AVI itself and remove the lower and/or upper portion of the video. Some fansubbers create TEENY TINY SUBS i.e. AnimeRev's version of Naruto and you could probably get away with trimming videos like that, but I wouldn't do it for something as HQ as Toriyamaworld's or Aone's versions of Naruto.

There is a plugin for VirtualDub that (says it) can remove things like watermarks. You might be able to use it to remove the subs. I haven't tried it (can't even remember what it's called, but I'm sure someone here does), but I assume it looks at the pixels before they pass under the watermark, and extrapolates these to recreate the missing pixels. You will probably end up with either soft pixels or ghosting if it can't recreate them accurately.

You could use the null transform filter to crop out the subs. I don't think the results would turn out very well for constantly changing subs if you use the logo away filter.

I second teegee420's thoughts, the logo away filter probably wouldn't do too much in the way of "removing" the subtitles.

Why not just look for HQ Raws instead of editing already subbed videos?
