  1. I'm going to put together a dvd for retail sale in a couple weeks and would like to know if I can legally use copyrighted music in the dvd...do I have to contact the folks first? Only give them due credit in the video? etc.

Don't want to steal, just interested in better music than the royalty-free stuff I've been using.

you'll need what is known as a synchronization license. be prepared to pay through the nose.

although you might be able to find some unsigned bands and get them to provide music in exchange for exposure, depending on your project. get everything in writing.

but if you want any signed artist's music, good luck - you're talking large cash.

you better be selling a lot of DVDs because it's not going to be worth it if you don't.

You could always use the Punk-o-matic http://evildog.type-cast.com/punkomatic.html to generate some tracks, record them, and then use them in your discs, since they would be original creations, no royalties at all!

i think fair use enables you to use a portion of it, something like 10% or 6 seconds.
