I'm sad. Here's why.
I have hundreds of duped dvd movies in DVD5 format that have been downsampled from DVD9 format using shrink, Big3, Rebuilder etc. Now with DVD9 burning capabilities looming on the horizon, I will have to re-burn them at the higher quality setting when I get my DVD9 burner.
But, DVDFAB to the rescue! My last dozen or so dupes have been copied with DVDFAB. It takes a retail DVD9 format and splits it into 2 DVD5 discs - thus not losing any quality in picture, sound, or extras.
QUESTION: I see that DVD10 and DVD18 formats are already available. Will current retail DVD9 releases be eventually re-released in higher formats? I could forsee that they might in order to get more extras on them, but is it possible to get better picture quality than DVD9?

Ummm...2 words...
High Definition.
Of course it's possible to get higher quality! Thats what HDTV is all about! Current DVD's are 480p at best. Of course you can buy special dvd players or use a HTPC to upsample to 720p or 1080i but the native resolution is still 480 horizontal lines. So even with existing technology you could increase the resolution up to 1080p (some projectors and maybe even tv's can handle this). some DVD's also are coming out with higher bitrates already. Who knows what will come along after that...
I don't see why you would feel the need to re-author the dvd's unless you are not satisfied with them currently. -
Don't forget that dvds can be 576p if u are in a PAL country. Yes, that's 20% more resolution than NTSC!

Well, I guess I would always like the best possible quality - that's why I would re-author them if they were re-leased at a higher quality.
At what resolution to the movies get produced at now? Shrek2 for example. I don't assume that a film could ever be re-leased at a higher rez than what it was produced at. What is today's maximum? -
shrek, along with the other computer animated movies look so good because they do not have to rely on capturing real life with a camera. Instead of recording and then touching it up digitally it's all digital all the time..now i know many cameras nowadays ARE all digital but they are still having to capture the same source. Anyways...computer animation looks so much more high quality because it is 100% fabricated and has none of the qualityissues of "real" recording.
currently the highest quality that you could hope to see is 1080p which translates into a computer resolution of 1920x1080 i believe for widescreen.

SOme stuff is available in these formats but mostly where 2 versions (often 4:3 and 16:9 versions) are made available on the same disc. Generally they are unpopular. Unpopular with the public who don't like flipping a disc half way throught a movie. Unpopular with the publishers as it leaves no surface available for artwork.
