    I am hoping to be able to run a firmware update and then be able to burn -r media in this device......any ideas????

    You might be lucky because the HP 300n is an OEM Nec ND-1100A
    and the Nec ND-1100A can be flashed to a Nec ND-1300A.

    i must be loosing my touch because i can not get the dang thing to update. it either says it updated it and has changed nothing or does not update it and says there is no valid drives found........i am going nuts here with this crappy thing
