This is the way I edit my ReplayTV Videos:

I usually record shows I archive in High quality first, then download them to my PC using DVArchive.

I run the downloaded mpg2 through rtvedit first. (You can do some editing with this software by noting the time frames of the mpg2 in VirtualDub, but it gets complicated).

I order to prevent audio sync problems I run the new mpg2 through rtvconvert.

The final mpg2 can then be edited and procesed through TMPGEnc Plus and TMPGEnc DVD Author.

I have been getting great DVD's and VCD's this way.

  3. I have cable digital TV.
ReplayTV has a special offer on a couple of their different recorders. #5040 & 35060.

From your comments I assume I will have no problems saving shows and transfering to my PC for editing and then burning my own DVD.

What is the connection between the PC & ReplayTV? USB or 9-pin or?

I will check the software links you kindly posted.

Will I be able to record any signal going to the TV?
For example if I play a VHS tape will replay TV record / convert it?

This might be a better way than spending $200 for A-D converter

ReplayTV has a built in Ethernet connection. In order to connect the ReplayTV to your PC you have to network it and use the DVArchive software (freeware).

I have my PC, my GF's Mac, PS2 and ReplayTV networked through a Netgear Router (wired and wireless). My GF and I download shows to my PC and her Mac on a daily basis.

I have my digital cable box hooked into my ReplayTV and watch/record shows that way. I also have my VCR hooked to my ReplayTV through one of the ReplayTV's lines-in. That way I have recorded video tapes to the ReplayTV then transfered the video to my PC to edit and burn to DVD.

  5. Thanks ipgpe13.

Do you have advice on a Replay 5040 at $120 (new)
    or 5060 $180 ( referb)
If the only dif is hours I will definately go with the 5040 as I don't expect to need more than 6 - 8 hours a week and the warranty is 1 year on parts with the new unit. Both have 90 day labor.

  6. I would definitely get the 5040. If, in the future, you feel like you want more than the 40 hours (or 10 high quality hours), you can buy a larger hard drive and replace the one inside of the ReplayTV.
