I have a .mov file that I want to convert to .mpg so that it can be viewed on windows without the need for a Quicktime plug-in. In Quicktime Pro, I see MPEG2 as an export option, but not the good ole fashioned MPEG1. What's the easiest way to go from .mov to MPEG1? (I originally tried to export the 3 minute movie as an AVI, but the quality was greatly reduced, and the resulting file size was huge)

if you have "toast video cd" as an option in quicktime, you can use that.
or, use ffmpegX in FastVCD mode.
These mpegs can be viewed on any PC (in windows media player)
I'm sure about the Toast VCD, and pretty sure about ffmpegX. -
I was able to transfer the movie to an older Mac running OS 9, and used Toast to convert it to MPEG, however the resulting file turned out to be about 10 times the size of the original .mov file. Obviously, that's not going to cut it. Any ideas? Anyone?

I know this isn't quite what you're after, but I recently had a similar problem to you, and AntnyMD reminded me that VLC is multi platform and plays movs very nicely.
