I have been getting emails containg viruses like W32.Beagle.X@mm from an email address capturecards@dvdrhelp.com

Just thought baldrick or the mods would like to know.

I don't know if someone is spoofing the site with the email or what.

  2. Damn Baldrick with his black sense of humour sending out viruses again.

Seriously though, wouldn't be the first time the site email addresses have been spoofed. Just be extra cautious with anything you open, even from trusted sources.

Many email viruses uses random reply email addresses(taken from the net or from the email address book).

Check the email headers for the IP-address to check where it came from.

I administer our work email. We recieve approximately 9000 Emails a week. About 100 are legitimate. Yes, that's 100 out of 9000. Of the remaining 8900, nearly 6000 are viruses. The rest are for sex organ enlargement, cheap pharmicuticals, Digital Cable TV descramblers (while they work, you will have to pay for everything you watch, trust me I was a cable TV engineer) that aren't descramblers, and of couorse "copy any DVD" freeware.

I get about twenty of those a day and always wondered if they were legit. How do they work? Do they unscramble channels but let the company know you're doing it?

Nope on both accounts. This is off-topic. What they are, are called "traps". They block the cable boxes ability to transmit information back to the cable company. Most cable boxes will let you view 2-4 programs before they quit. Fortunately for the cable company, the boxes remember this, and when you eventually turn in your cable box, you will get billed(or sued if the box is found to work fine). You may also have an unexpected visit from the cable company demanding their box (you must surrender it, it's in your EULA) because it is not responding to control signals.

The traps cost about $5 from the OEM in bulk new, $8 singley, and the rip-off artist what what??? $80? The same goes for the "copy any DVD software", but we all knew that!

As a side note, you can make a trap for about 30 cents worth of wire and some reading.
