Supermediastore.com is having a sale on Ritek G04 4x DVD-R media, selling 100-packs for $69. You can add coupon code "d3off" (thanks dealmac.com) to take another $3 off the price, yielding a per-unit cost of 66¢ (+ tax where applicable)!!!! Ground shipping is free in the continental US. These discs are great, and compatible with everything. I've never seen them sold for so cheap. The 50-packs are pretty cheap too. Go get them here:

uh, how do these compare to TDK branded,
and will they burn at 2x in a pioneer A04?

Most 4 x rated media I've tried, I can only get
    1x burns using my a04...

They will burn at 1x on your drive. I've never tried TDK, but I've had perfect compatibility with these Ritek discs, and I've tried them on MANY dvd players and drives.

  6. Just thought I'd add the folowing info. If you have a "Fry's" electronics store in your area, they are selling 25-packs of 4X DRVRs (their own brand called "GQ") for $14.75. That's 59 cents a disc (before sales tax). I haven't had the chance to burn one yet but I have examined their dye surface closely and they look very clean.

  7. Sorry...in my previous post, that should read DVDRs (not DRVRs).

ROFL, well that's good, at least they don't sell dirty DVD-R media... The true test is in compatibility with a bunch of set-top DVD players. I've been burned by bad media before, and found that Ritek are excellent quality (and very competitively-priced), so I'm not going to bother with anything else again.

  9. how do they compare to TDK?
well, many of the TDK's I have are Ritek discs, if you find TDK "Made in Japan" those were better but not really any around anymore.
With TDK you never know what you're getting, and now it seems most TDK's will be CMC crap! so I would run from any TDK Made in Taiwan now. You may get lucky at get Ritek but it's a gamble.
You may want to check out the media forum one this.
Also, many have had some bad batches or Ritek G04 lately, personally, I've burnded about 150 without a coaster, when they're good they're great. But I'm avoiding them for awhile, just grabbed some ProDisc at RIMA.COM for $54 per 100, many seem to be raving about the Prodisc.
Anyway that was before this deal, so at that price, I might have gone for the Ritek.
yes, they burn fine at 2x on an A05 at least.

  10. Yeah, the other day Fry's had the GQ 50 pack 4x DVD-R inkjet printable for $34.99 a pack. So far they burn at 4x on my Sony DRU500a and at 8x on my a107 with hacked firmware. Then they print up well on my Epson R200. Now if only I could get the ink to be water proof.

They claim to ship to Puerto Rico but not Canada. This is not good. I guess it would be good if I lived in Puerto Rico.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

I think if you choose the non-free shipping, you can get it delivered elsewhere. Also, it might be due to Canada's stupid media tax thing...

Man, so unfortuantely I'll be sticking with TDK for now.
I'd rather have a 2x burn than go back to a 1x burn.
BTW, the TDK's I bought when BestBuy had them on sale
$99 for 100 spindle, I have burned 15 so far, and no coasters.
I did however had a weird start issue with Toast 6.05 while
DVD2ONEX was compling in the background, and Quicktime Pro
was saving a mov file that was 1hr10minutes long back to
the desktop. It caused me to coaster one disc.

Other than that, my TDK's have been pretty solid, so
I'll stick with what works until they don't work anymore....

Ritek G03 will burn at 2x on 2x burners (except the Pioneer 103, which is really a 1x burner in 2x clothing). G04 are 4x media, and those only burn at 1x on 2x drives. Meritline.com and others carry the G03 media.

When I first learned that you could back up DVDs about 8 months ago, I purchased the Ritek blanks online. I have had maybe 5 errors in the 150 I have used, and that is becuase I realized that the powerbook was getting bumped while toasting (which ruins the disc).

So I am definately ordering this, even though I have 50 sitting here. It's such a good deal.

They only burn at 1x on a 2x?
I have been using G04 and they burn much quicker on my AL powerbook (2x) than my Dual G4, which only has a 1x. weridness.

I think it really depends on the drive. Some 2x burners will only burn 4x media at 1x, while others are happy to burn at full 2x speed. I think the Pioneer 2x burners only burn 4x media at 1x, whereas most others might be able to burn them at 2x. Those Pioneer 104 or A04 drives will burn the Ritek G03 (2x) discs at 2x, but they'll only be able to burn the G04 (4x) discs at 1x. It's a crapshoot, really.
