  2. According to Philips it will not be possible to upgrade existing 8x DVD recorders to DL layer recorders, contrary to what some rumours are saying.

In theory the laser power of an 8x drive is strong enough to handle DL but the problem is, is that the OPU (Optical Pickup Unit) of the drive is often not good enough.
This will lead to quality problems.

However, some drives with good OPUs could, in theory, be upgraded although they’d have to be handpicked.

    So far, just 3 manufacturers...

    LiteOn/Sony
    812S/U18A: very likely (>90% probability)**
451S/851S: iffy (~30% probability?) (i.e., not impossible, but don't count on it)

    NEC
    2100A/2500A: very likely (>90% probability)**

    BenQ
822: BenQ will officially release a DL upgrade on Sept. 30

**Although both of these have been confirmed, there is still worry because
    1) the tests were done only on experimental firmwares; things could change between the test firmware & the actual retail
    2) results will likely vary from drive to drive, as DL drives have the same hardware as SL drives, but are built with tighter tolerances, so SL drives that don't fit into those tolerances will likely have problems and not produce very good burns

The SONY DL drive f/w will have a media compatibility table excluding any and all dual layer DVDR disks known to mankind.

I also felt like being an ass (since I am a SONY recorder owner).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

don't recall where i read it, but the failure rate for flashing SL drives to DL burners was a whoppy 70%. did anyone else read this. wish i could recall the source might it have been Philips
