  1. Hi,

I have recorded some TV episodes and wanted to remove the commercials from these.

Summary - Recorded via a standalone DVD Recorder (Panasonic E50) and the quality is excellent (as best as DVD, give or take).

The problem I have is that I now want to remove the commercials.

Could someone explain how to do this, and with what software (preferably something a newbie can easily use or learn).

    Thanks

    Rob

I prefer AVISynth, and the TRIM command for this, but it's certainly not newbie friendly.

That said, you can use VirtualDubMod to do this. It has a more newbie friendly GUI interface.

Just open the MPEG in VDub, and use the slider at the bottom to move to your first commercial. Use the EDIT menu, and choose:

EDIT -> SET SELECTION START ( shorcut key = HOME key )

This will mark the beginning of the range of frames you will be deleting.

Move to the end of the commercials and select:

EDIT -> SET SELECTION END ( shortcut key = END key )

That completes the range of commercials in your videos. You then delete the select range by choosing:

EDIT -> DELETE ( shortcut key = DEL key )

Any frames contained within that selected range will be removed from the output. You can then frameserve from VirtualDub to your encoder of choice, or save an AVI file to be encoded later.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...

since it is already mpeg2 dvd format -- you could use mpeg-vcr (womble) and then you dont have to re-encode .. or

just re-author the files and skip over the commercials by putting a chapter before and chapter after and make a jump ..
