  3. And there isn't likely to be one either for a very long time unless it exists as an add-on/proggy for PS2 or Xbox.
    1. The only reason that there can by stand-alone VCD and DVD players is that they are firstly standardised. DivX is not standardised in any way or form and thus getting a stand-alone device to play all the different variations of DivX well is highly problematic
    2. Another reason why stand-alone VCD and DVD players play their respect format so well and so cheaply is because specialised MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 hardware decoders exist. Although hardware MPEG-4 decoders exist, it is unlikely that they work well with DivX encoded files. Furthermore, it is unlikely anybody will DESIGN a chip especially for decoding DivX video.
    3. Ultimately, there are issues with licensing what is seen as a pirate format
    4. By the time any of this becomes not only legally by technologically feasible, it may already be obsolete if there is a cheap and widely accepted recordable DVD format
