This might be a little of topic but what the hell, i downloaded a .rar file, i can open it easy enough, but when i try to extract any of the files it asks for a password. there was no file with the .rar that tells you the password or in the .rar itself. i know you can get a few programs that read the passwords of password protected microsoft word files, so i was just wandering if there is any similar programs for rar files or any other way of cracking passwords of winrar files?
help appreciated

only brute force methods i think --do a search on google ... there is a program to do this and can take days ..
just ask the person who made the file what the password is .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
yes, there are a couple of progs that are capable of cracking rar (zip) files. only problem with using them is that the only reliable method used is BRUTE FORCE. that translate to...it's going to take a long, long time with your system running 24/7 to crack the rar file(s). might take hours, days, weeks, months, or years. lots of variable determine the time required. mostly the length of the password (which of course you do not know). i am not sure about RAR files but ZIP files can have passwords up to 50 characters. if your file have a password of this length and brute force is used, forget it. I think the time required to crack the password using a roomful of the latest high-powered computers tied together crunching 24/7 would be...200 years (give or take a year).
here's are hints to crack the password w/o using any prog...use the name of the website where it came from. then use just the prefix of that website ( leave out the .com, .org, etc). try all lowercase letters. good luck. -
Why don't you just ask the person you got it from? Or ask in the place it came from.

I had a zip file I had to do that to. Took about 1.5 days on a 850 mhz with 256 ram. Not many other options if u need it quick

How is talking about cracking a password-protected rar file different from say, providing a Nero keygen or "Full Version" download site? If someone wants to crack a file that he's obviously not authorized to use, let him go to one of the many warez boards out there to get help.
I would have reported this, but since a mod is "helping", I figure that it can't be reported. -

I wasn't "looking to report". The thread was there and I made a comment. It doesn't matter if it's porn pics or his mom's bank numbers, it's still protected and he wasn't authorized since he doesn't have the password.
And no, I don't have anything better to do. :P -

Yeah, you guessed it. Forgot the password. A decade does that to you.
I found a program that cracked it in about 3 hours on my P4.
I downloaded everything I could, picked up a virus or two, had my desktop changed to porn, and had spyware added. But I cleaned that mess up, got a good crack software, and I was able to open MY OWN FILES once again.
.... the part that angered me was when I learned the ZIP didn't have the file after all, and I must have deleted it years ago.
The software was commercial software with a trial ... so it's obviously not TOO illegal from what I saw.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
