I have tried to record wide screen TV signal on the 510. When I play it back on a 4:3 TV it fills the screen but is scretched not letter boxed. I can get a letter box when setting my digital box to letter box however, I'm sure this will not fill the whole screen on a wide screen TV. Is it possible to record widescreen programs to play in widescreen on a wide screen TV and letter box on a 4:3 TV.

    Regards

    NO.

The problem here is that the DVD recorder flags the recording as 4:3 even if it is 16x9

That is why the 16x9 only looks normal on a 16x9 TV because the DVD player doesn't know to resize to 4:3 since the disc says it is 4:3 when it really is 16x9

You could record to a DVD-RW and rip to your computer then change the flags to read 16x9 instead of 4:3 then use your computer DVD burner to make a DVD-R or DVD+R back-up.

Then reuse the same DVD-RW over and over again.

    P.S.
Rip the DVD-RW to the computer in FILE MODE - ALL FILES with DVD Decrypter. Then use IFOEdit to change ALL of the IFO files so that they read 16x9 instead of 4:3 (except the menu setting which should be left as 4:3). When you are done make an ISO IMAGE file with ImgTools classic and burn to a DVD-R/+R using DVD Decrypter.

Thanks, tried this and it works fine. The only problem now is how do I do this for the video stored on the hard disk.

You will have to copy from the HDD to a disc such as a DVD-RW then import that to the computer and do as normal.

You might want to check out the DVD Recorder forum at the AVS FORUM because there are many people there (more so than this site) talking about such issues so who knows there might be an easier way.

  5. I got into this debate over at Avs Forum. Apparently, the 510H is CAN set the mpeg/ifo 16x9 flag if the analog signal being input has 16x9 set into line 23 of the vertical blanking interval (VBI).

The problem is, very few sources will. My DirecTV Sony HD200 receiver will not, but apparently the newer HD300, or Hughes HTL receiver will.

Regardless, problem is solved using DVDPatcher or IFO edit.

Yes I think I actually remember reading that thread ... small world!

  7. I tried setting the flags with dvd patcher, bit it didn't seem work.

Is the "flag" different then VBI line 23?
Does ifoedit do something different then DVD Patcher?
Does the DVD player looks at the flag for the VBI?

    Thanks

  8. You were probably trying to use DVD Patcher on the VOB files?

That won't work, it has to be used on the pre-authoring mpeg stream. Thereafter, when the authoring software sees the flag inside the mpeg stream, it creates the header files IFO, BUF and sets the flag set there. The DVD player reads the flag from the header files.

So if you retroactively used DVD Patcher on the VOB files, the flag would be set in the mpeg stream, but since the header files were already authored beforehand without it, the DVD player reads 4x3.

The simple solution is to use IFOEDIT retroactively on the header files, after authoring, before burning.

  9. And yes the flag is different than line VBI 23, and yes IFOEDIT works differently than DVDPatcher. IFOEDIT works on the small header files IFO, BUF, DVD Patcher works on the main mpeg stream, (big files).

  10. Tom,

    Thanks much.

Your first answer - implied the 2nd. But I appreciate your being clear.

Yes, I tried editing the VOBs (they are from a Philips Stand-Alone DVDR985 recorder).

I'll try the ifoedt method. Is it clear in the program what I need to do (this puppy is sometimes kinda cryptic).

  11. 1.) Start IFOEDIT
2.) Click "OPEN" in lower left corner.
3.) Point to the VIDEO_TS folder.
    4.) Double click VIDEO_TS.IFO
5.) In the lower frame, Double click on the line or icon for VTS_1 Video, title set, not menus.
    6.) Dialog box opens.
7.) Check the radio buttons for 16:9 and Automatic letterboxed
8.) Don't change the resolution even if it looks wrong.
9.) Lower left hand corner "Save."
10.) Do the same thing for the other IFO files.
11.) When prompted, save the new BUP files as well.

    Thanks

I'll give it a try over the weekend.
