  1. Hello Everyone,

I heard that you can upgrade the firmware of PIONEER A07 DVD BURNER and make it capable of burning 2 layers on a DVD media.
that's way you could burn 9.4 Giga - and you don't have to compress movies and lose quality before copying...

well - before i buy - may you please guide me? i'm kinda new to dvd burning!

    1. does anyone here has the Pioneer A07 DVD burner?
what do you think about it? is it reliable?
    2. what about burning 2 layers? all this stuff is kinda new, does burning 2 layers causing problems?
(i'm afraid that i'll burn important data and after a while, the disc will become unreadable or something...)
    3. what about DVD players compatibility? let's say i'll upgrade the burner firmware and burn 2 layers with it, will the disc be playable with any home dvd player?
    4. can you burn 2 layers on a regular 4.7 GB media?
or do you need a special media? if so - is there such media?
and does burning 2 layers affect the quality level of the media?

    5. do you know a DVD media made by FORTIS?
can you tell some pros & cons about it?
will i have any problem burning with PIONEER A07 on this media?
is there any chance that the media will become unreadable in a few years?
this media is very cheap - it's kinda suspicious to me

i heard from a friend that in the dvd burning age, there are a lots of compatiblity issues between the burner type and the media.
    is it true?

    Regards,
    Morpheus

The other thing to consider is that while it appears that the hardware used in Sony' new dual layer burner is indeed the A07, until a firmware update comes out, it is still only a single layer burner. I would also be surprised if Sony release an official firmware update to change this, so you will have to wait until the dual layer is release, and it's firmware reverse engineered to fit into the A07.

  6. Sony doesn't make the a07, but sony doesn't make much of anything in some areas (like cdrom units). They just let other companies make them and rebadge them (which is good.. sony's optical devices blow).

It is kind of early to give you an answer because double layer discs are not out on the market yet. From what I read, it could be a complicated process as the data would be written to both layers evenly eliminating the need for dummy filler data to make the disc functional.

  9. Plus won't SW have to be upgraded to write dual layer? If anything the SW Author I use freaks out if I go beyond 4.3GB or the Encoder I use if I try to write an mpeg over 4.? GB says NO Way Jose.

the decision is up to you. I personally already have an 8x burner and am hoping for a firmware upgrade that will write double layer. However, if not available I will buy a new double-layer burner. The discs are going to be expensive though. I read that they will be about five dollars each. If you want a single layer burner, there are alot of quality ones out, I use an Emprex 1008 8x dual format burner. It cost me 79 dollars.

can u be more specific about the quality of the Pioneer A07 Burner?
is it a good burner? would u recommend me buying it regarding the other burners i've mentioned in my last message?

when 2 layers will be available, do you think this burner will do the job well? or i'll have to buy a new burner?

    Regards,
    Morpheus
