Recently I'm having this weird problem trying to burn VCDs from Hauppauge WinPVR 350 MPEG1 VCD files. No matter what I try I get the message "MPEG file not compatible with this VCD engine" and the process aborts.
I'm using Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 with my WinPVR 350 and capturing to the correct MPEG1 VCD format. Here's the weird thing - my DVD files from the same combination work okay - and when I first began using the combination the VCD burning was fine too. I've tried old VCD files and made new ones just in case it was a 'software version' issue but the error message still appears.
I'm trying to figure out what I might have done to cause the 'VCD engine' error. I've asked Hauppauge and Ulead and so far have had no success. Hauppauge say talk to Ulead and Ulead say install a patch which I'd already installed.
I had installed Pinnacle DVD Impression Pro, which I've since uninstalled, and updated various drivers from Hauppauge and Ulead. I've uninstalled the Hauppauge software completely and reinstalled. Same with Ulead's DVD MovieFactory 2 and still the problem persists.
Since I don't even know what the message means, I'm at a loss how to take this further. On the face of it there appears to be some mismatch between the Hauppauge-produced VCD files and Ulead's authoring /burning software, but it was working fine and I don't know what I did to change it.
Can anyone help, please?
Robert.

Hi!
No matter what I try I get the message "MPEG file not compatible with this VCD engine" and the process aborts.
I have a older Hauppauge Win-PVR card and even if I select VCD as capturing format, the captured MPEG-File is not VCD compatible. I have to use the VCD Converter to make the captured file VCD compatible. Maybe there's the same problem with Hauppauge WinPVR 350 card.
You could also use TMPEG to make your file VCD compatible.

Thanks Znooky,
I'm working on that.
But first I think I'll move back to an earlier Hauppauge driver set and see what happens.
thanks, -
Esmonde,
Does the Hauppauge software let you select audio format independently from video format? If so, that could be the problem -- wrong audio bitrate or compression format. The VCD spec calls for 44.1 KHz, 224 kbps, MPG audio. And just for completeness, check to make sure the video is MPG1, 1150 kbps, constant bitrate.
Since you have the PVR-350 maybe you can answer a few questions for me. Do you use the TV out feature? If so, is it possible to watch non-mpg (XVID AVI files for examples) on the TV? Or is the TV out limited to MPG files? Thanks! -
Yes, the Hauppauge software allows various audio/video combinations. But I've been using the standard presets that Hauppauge suggest, and as I said it had worked fine in the past.
Strangely though, last night I tried capturing again, but this time used another Hauppauge option whereby the VCD selection is made by an icon on the WinTV2000 Record panel. Recorded around 15 minutes which burned fine to VCD. Still trying to figure out the difference.
As far as I can tell the TV out of the WinPVR 350 will only output what appears at the inputs or files saved in WinTV2000 application.

Esmonde,
Thanks for the report about the WinPVR 350 not playing AVI files. Not what I wanted to hear though!
Have you checked the properties of your VCD files that don't work? Right click on the clip in MF2 and select Media Clip Properties. That's about the last thing I can think of checking.
