Having burned 8 disks 5 of them fail. The disk surface resembles the "rings of Saturn."
The disks are genuine Grade A Ritek G04's 4x DVD-R.
When "Burnt" and played the video is corrupt and/or the movie freezes.
Is there a way to check the disks prior to burning them?
Any help appreciated.

It would be helpful if you would provide information as to which Riteks you have (orange label shiny silver, matte silver or such), which DVD burner with which firmware you are using and what software you are using to burn.
Still a few bugs in the system... -
Oh yeah sorry,
Plextor PX-708A (Firmware 1.04)
Purple Labelled Ritek G04
Using Instantcopy 7 but has worked ok on some of the same disks.
Thanks -
I use RITEK G04 Orange LandscapeDVD-R 4x discs with my Plextor 708A and have no problems. I use Nero version 5.5.10.42 to burn. Try using the latest Nero version 6.3.1.6.
The ring you see after you've burned the disc is from when the speed increases the dye of the dvd-r will have a different color. Nothing to worry about. This was confirmed by Plextor. -
I guess you have hardware problem.
I have 50 matte G04 Riteks burned and no coasters. I also use the Nero 5.5.10.42 supplied with my PX-708A. Have you really need to upgrade to Nero 6?
1. Restart your PC and disable antivirus s/w
2. Check you drives settings (DMA mode).
3. Try with different source (film, data, etc.)
No other idea. -
Hmmm are you usin these Purpel grade A media? They are overprinted Riteks and the quality can be B or even C grade!

Well the ring is not a good sign and it's something to worry about. All my disc showing these rings in the dye have problems and in fact they are Purpel Grade A media!
I don't have any problems with the RITEK G04 orange tops. If you're having problems with it, it doesn't mean others will. There are a lot of dvd variables in burning and authoring dvds. Besides the RITEK G04 I use MAXELL DVD-R 4x, TDK DVD-R, VERBATIM DVD-R, IMATION (RICOH)DVD+R 4x, & FUJI (TAIYO YUDEN) DVD-R 4x. Those are all the "RECOMMENDED" brands that Plextor supports. The RITEK discs are on the "COMPATIBLE" list. In my experience not all the "COMPATIBLE" brands will work well with the Plextor 708A.
For me the RITEK G04 DVD-R works and plays fine in different brands of standalone dvd players. Some MEMOREX DVD media are manufactured by CMC which is on the compatible list but is considered crappy media which didn't work for me. -
Dye rings are bad.
Whoever at Plextor said it was fine was full of crap.

Opps I noticed you said, "look at middle of page". Reading -
The ring at the speed switch is still bad. Either poor media, or a bad drive.
My NEC does it to cheap media, and they skip at that point. With good media, the rings are not noticed.
Ritek will dye melt on Sony 500, 510, Pioneer A03, and A05s, which none are 8x burners, so the speed switch theory doesn't apply.
This is from an unstable manufactoring process which cause uneven coats of the dye layer. Some production lines in the Ritek plant have this problem, while other don't. Quantity over quality is the new way -
Thanks disturbed & lordsmurf.
Odd thing is one of the RITEK DVD-R 4x spindles I have only a few of them have the ring while others are perfectly fine. I burned about 10 of these today, 3 of them have the ring. Then I went to look at the DVD-R 4x MAXELL & FUJI's I burned today and they were fine. I don't have a firmware hack on my Plextor 708A so the speed thing is out. I only burn @4x speed. It must be the dye but yet those discs playback fine that's what puzzles me. Wondering if in time they won't? Who knows? I appreciate the information you both have given.
