  1. I got a couple of videos that I am trying to convert from a square format 16:9 to something either 16:9 not squished/stretched or something 4:3 not squished/stretched. I'm not having any luck w/various settings for video source and video output in Tmpeg.

    Can anyone offer any help?

    TIA

For questions about aspect ratios check this guide:

How are you determining that it is 16:9? From your post it seems like you might just be assuming that since it displays squarelike, but that's how a SVCD will look on a pc if you don't play it on something that parses the aspect ratio flag. Obviously 480x480 doesn't have a 4:3 aspect ratio, but if played in a qualified player it is stretched to that aspect ratio and plays correctly. 16:9 actually isn't even supported in the SVCD standard and won't display correctly on most hardware dvd players.

So what you need to ask yourself is what format you want this in. Chances are that is just a compliant SVCD, so if your dvd player supports it then just burn it as such. Its probably fine.

If you want a DVD then I'd resize it down to 352x480.

  4. AVI Codec is telling me that 480x480 16:9. I'm just trying to get it to MPEG1, quality isn't all that great.

Try playing your mpegs in Power DVD or WinDVD. I think you might be confused about the nature of SVCD's and the fact that despite having a square resolution, the video will be properly stretched to the correct aspect ratio by a good software player as well as your DVD player(assuming it's SVCD capable). Also, why are you trying to get it to mpeg-1 quality when mpeg-2 produces a better picture?

  6. Folks,

I never messed with SVCD's before. With the pointers you've given and the guides I found with the ideas you've given me, I got enough to mess around with.

Thanks so much for the help.
