The latest PC Magazine has a nice evaluation of several flash-based and HD-based players, including the new iPod mini. They tested the ear buds in a real-world way as this pic shows:
The frequency response shown in the following graph demonstrates that the iPod in-ear buds clearly outclass the others. What's especially impressive is the virtually nonexistent dropoff at the lower frequencies, which is normally a given with any portable. The only negative I see is overaccentuated midrange:
I don't have a player but I've been looking at what's out there. I think iPod is the way to go.

iPod very nice. Its worth the money. The only thing I didn't like are those earbuds. I find them uncomfortable. They produce a great sound but I couldn't keep them in and when I did they didn't sit right at all. Of course, now people on the street don't know I have an iPod cuz the cord on my in-ear buds is black.

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend? -
I have some of those Sony "turbo" earbuds. They have a projection that sticks right into your ear. They don't move or try to fall out like most other earbuds do, and they give really nice clear sound. Although they don't sound like it, they are actually dead comfortable once you get used to them - it's like having nothing in at all. They have neodynum (spelling?) drivers in them, which I have been told is the better kind. I don't know how they would compare to the iPod earbuds, but they are certainly nice.

A spread of more than 30 dB?! ouch. makes you appreciate proper speaker with a respone 20hz - 15khz(-3dB)
And makes me appreciated my sennheiser headphones - i can't do earphones, never found a comfortable pair - ears always go red. -

I agree sennheiser Headphones are the way to go, Rd45 or even newer.Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons. -

nah, this is the coolest
I've been quite happy using a creative jukebox 3 in the car, way cheaper than the ipod and a 20GB drive. also cool because people see it and thinks it's a portable cd player, and ask "how do i put in a cd?"
Reminds me of my ex girlfriends mum, she asked "so where does the tape go?" when she saw my DVB PVR -
