I have always used Orange Riteks since they were brought out. Up to now they have worked perfectly with no problems during playback.
The last few batchs I have got have been rubbish. I have today noticed they look different. They used to have a rough surface (orange side) with ridge lines underneath. These new ones are very smooth like the cheap princo's.
Any ideas or have are these bad batchs?

All of the orange Ritek's I have ever seen have been grade B "overprints".
Sometimes you get lucky and don't have any problems, but more often than not there will be some defect with them, even if it's being able to see the original print under the one applied over the top, which sounds like what you've got.
Double handling can damage the discs, or if the disc fails QA, they are sold off cheap and over-printed to disguise the company who does not want to be associated with them.
I don't use overprints because they can be so variable. It's a chance you take, and if these are indeed overprints, you may have to write them off as a loss if they're unusable since they were probably sold without warranty. -
Maybe some of you guys that have the orange tops can help us... is the media code the same as the Ridata G4's ... if the orange tops are over prints they could still have the same media code, right? So that could explain why some that have the same media code are coming back as bad since they are marked that way at printing but the BAD ones are just put in a different bin and sold as defective or unbranded.
Is the media code the same or different because some people in this forum room seem to think the Ridata Red wrapped ones have quality control issues too ... but ... I think some that are having problems are refering to the orange tops. It's a little confusing for me and I'm hoping you guys can help.
Thanks. -
i have been using the ritek overprints for ages and have never had any probs. perhaps you have accidentally purchased the inferiour grade B version, described as the "landscape design"
for visual differences, check out www.svp.co.uk because they stock both! you will noticed that there is no warrenty with the landscape design and that they admit it is grade B stock.
the Ritek Orange overprints are still grade A manufactured, just with overprints1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!

I've only used the Orange tops (with landscape).
I never had any problems with them at all.
Grade A......Grade B.....Grade whatever. They have always worked great for me. I also test them after burning in dvdinfopro each time. So far, they've been flawless.
I have 4 seperate batches (purchased at different times) left in my stock.
1 25pak purchased 11-01-03
1 25pak purchased 12-20-03
2 25paks purchased 3-01-04
In ever pack the DVDs feels the same (you can feel the landscape stencil) and the media code is the same. I bought them all at pcclub.com, but I pick them up in the store....
Unfortunately, I switched to other DVDs so I can print with my R200. I'm just going to use my orange tops to send out my family videos to all the realitives. -
All my orange ones with perfect. But that was some months ago. I dropped Ritek recently because the success rate is hovering around 80% most of the time on many discs (though inkjet still appear to be fine).

I use the orange ritek landscape ones and haven't had any problems with it.

I have a batch of the same disks you describe with about 20% bad and very visible flaws in the dye. See the link below, this was reported on a while ago in the UK.

I bought one pack and tried them out, no coasters at all, it was perfect. For the $20 for 25 price it was a great deal at the time (back in dec of last year). So I went ahead and bought 2 more packs.
The second pack I ended up with 10 coastersI need not say I was not pleased at all.
I'm on my third and last pack right now, i've only burned a couple, but haven't got a coaster yet. I bought a 50 pack of the sonics at shop4tech to see how good those worked for me. I have yet to get a coaster on the sonics so I've been using those instead of the orange riteks right now.
