    I have just bought a Ricoh MP5240A DVD+R/DVD+RW writer.

At the time of purchase I had not realised that there were the two different types of media format +R/+RW & -R/-RW. I only found this out when trying to use some -RW discs which wouldn't work of course.

Having now got the right discs I have begun to question if the DVDs I produce on my PC will be playable in my stand-alone DVD player (the object of the exercise) or whether I need to try and exchange it for a -R/-RW model.

My stand-alone DVD player is a Kiiro 838dDVD (I believe Kiiro have now ceased trading) and looking through the manual it says to use discs with the DVD video mark which suggest my fears that the +R/+RW discs won't be compatible.

Can someone confirm if this is the case?

Also, can I assume that a -R/-RW writer will in any case produce discs that are more likely to be compatible with other stand-alone DVD players?

    Thanks

  2. If you have compatibility issues regarding DVD+R/W's get DVDInfo PRO and use its bitsetting feature

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm downloading DVD Info Pro now but the screen shots look a bit complicated for a grey haired old wrinkly like me.

Any chance you could give me an idiots explaination as to how this will help me?

    Thanks

  5. Hi, I use a programme called RemSelector. It basically bypasses the region coding on PC based DVD viewers, such as Power DVD, WInDVd, so in effect makes your dvd rom region free (even if it's already region locked.

It's easy to use & it remembers your settings, & it's extremely cheap & it works all the time.

    Mr Luberman

Thanks for the reply. Will take a look although I'm already using AnyDVD which does much the same thing.

Also the problem I have isn't with my PC DVd player but my stand-alone DVD player.

I've now exchanged the DVD rewriter for a dual standard model so this, hopefully, may solve my problems as I'm fairly sure now that the stand-alone is DVD-R.

The Ricoh 5240 came with software that allowed the book type to be changed you could have done that.

    Thanks for the reply.

Must confess I don't understand about booktype. I'll have to look into it to try and get to grips with it.

Probably the easiest thing to try would be to burn a disk on a +RW disk and see if it plays. If it does then a +R should play also. If it doesn't then it could be mean your player isn't compatible with '+' disks but it could also mean that your player isn't compatible with RW disks.

You can probably assume that's true, but aren't you're really interested in whether they're more compatible with your particular stand-alone than whether they're more compatible with stand-alones in general.

  10. now it's too late anyway, but I have a + only dvd burner, and I play with the bitsetting and it's perfect, it's even more compatible that - format....
you shouldn't have exchanged that drive..but this is my opinion
