  1. I have been using DVD Shrink and love it but latley it has been messing up on me so I was looking at DVD Decyptor. Is this the best way to go? If so what do I use to get it for my HDD back to a new DVD?

    Thank you much

DVDShrink is dead(no longer being updated).
DVDDecrypter is dead(no longer being updated).
Shrink however is still very useful with work-arounds like DVDFabDecrypter.
DVDDecrypter will always still be useful even though it cannot rip new DVD's....but that is another story.

Use DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your HDD. Use Shrink or DVD Rebuilder to compress it to fit the new disc. Use Imgburn to burn the results.

  4. So there is not one program to do it all?

There never was. Shrink was never as a good a ripper as DVD Decrypter, and was never as good a compressor as DVD Rebuilder. They each had (have ?) there place.

You might look at CloneDVD2, which is not free, or continue to use DVD Shrink but have AnyDVD (also not free) running in the background to remove the copy protection.

DVDFab Platinum or Gold ,will do it all........but I prefer ripping to HDD then the other tools to finish my backups....to each his own......

I used DVD decrypter to rip, then shrank it a bit with dvd shrink, but when I burner it with convertXtodvd my media came out as a coaster. Can't even read it with windows explorer.

I ran all the above programs pretty straight forwardly. Didn't monkey around execept to remove a couple languages and reduce the size a bit.

Did I mess up by using convertXtoDVD? Should I have used Isoburn? I like convertXtoDVD, it's so straight forward, I use it a lot.

    Thanks

I use and recommend RipIt4Me which is another ripper out of current production (apparently), but I find it useful. The last version (1.7.1.0) looks at a movie DVD briefly then tells you whether DVD Shrink will probably work, or whether something else is needed, such as RipIt4Me itself or DVDFab HD Decrypter. In 95% of cases DVD Shrink works fine. If not, one of the other two rippers has always worked for me. Occasionally one of them won't work, but the other one will.

When RipIt4Me is used, it uses DVD Decrypter for the rip, along with some built-in improvements, so I recommend it rather than using DVD Decrypter alone. You can set it up for 1-click mode then it is easy.

Note that it's also helpful to have two different brands of DVD burners installed. Occasionally my Lite-On won't read a disc (cyclic redundancy test fails), but then my LG model invariably does the job - or vice versa.

I recommend ImgBurn to burn DVDs, either single layer or DL. It's the best.

  9. I use dvd shrink with any dvd running in the background, have worked with 1000's od dvd's,no problem, even did tom cruise war of the worlds.
Do not agree it is not good as a ripper.

Best way to get a one-click solution is to get AnyDVD and let it just run in the background (it will load automatically when you boot-up). Then just use CloneDVD 2, Nero Recode 2 or even DVD Shrink to rip compress and burn. Shrink is a good do it all tool, but CloneDVD 2 seems to do a better job of cleaning the DVD up when it is ripped. Shrink & Recode are more versatile as far as setting up different compression ratios on different parts of the DVD and their output seems to be a bit better at higher compression (less than 80% of the original). If it's gonna be less than 70-75% of the original, there really is no substitue for DVD-Rebuilder. As to your original question.... any of these will work as an all-in-one with AnyDVD running in the background.

  11. I have always found clone to give poor results-its funny isn;t it how some find software okay and others not-I wonder if its to do with others issues on a given pc, like other software-processor or even if anti virus stuff is too aggressive.
