  1. I'm a newbie with DVD ripping, and I have read the guides and articles on this site about DVD ripping but a lot of it seems like too much of a hassle just to rip DVDs in the manner I want to do it in.

I want to be able to rip selected scenes directly from a DVD and save them as an. AVI on my HD. Are there any programs that allows this?

If you want to cut out certain scenes , you need to create the AVIfor the full movie . THen virtualdub will let you Edit out whatever clips you want.
Don't think you can avoid the DVD to AVI step for what you want to do.

    Not necessarily

You could use VdubMpeg to open the VOBs and save
sections out as AVIs without converting the whole thing

  4. I tried VdubMpeg but the resulting .AVI had no sound and I couldn't find any options to lower the video resolution.

You need to add the resize filter to change the resolution. In the audio menu, you must select Full Processing to retain the audio.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. Use XMPEG. One of the fastest and Higest quality DVD to DivX programs, and it allows you to select scenes by chapter or frame and allows you to actually add in/delete scenes (even from different files). Very easy to use and it's free @ xmpeg.net. Best quality video b/c it doesn't convert colorspapces (keeps in native YV12) and also the fastest for that reason. No need to encode the whole thing. Another option would be the latest FlasKMPEG which you can find at www.doom9.org in their downloads section. NOt as many options as XMPEG, but will let you actually select whether you want the main movie or the extras/intro. THey really need to merge those two softwares into one if you ask me....

  7. Huzzah! I can do what I wanted to do in Xmpeg. I can't seem to encode in MPEG format though -- I get a screwed up picture where it's all grey and there's "panels" featuring the footage I ripped (panels are side by side) and at the bottom of the outputted clip there's jagged lines.

Anyone know what the problem is there?

Also, the AVIs I ripped ... when I import them into the editing timeline of Adobe premiere, the audio is not audible. Anyone know why?

  8. Don't use flask or XMPEG for MPEG encodes. It uses the old nasty ass bbmpeg engine which is a bitch to configure and is very slow and rarely works anyway. For mpeg, load your vobs into DVD2AVI and follow that guide to load your audio an dvideo into tempgenc. Load the source, choose a template, choose the source range and encode. Try remuxing the audio w/ video in VirtiualDub on your avi and then try to import to premier.
