use TSCV (GUI for VCDImager). With it you can put chapters at any place you want them. So you have 1 track but within the track you can navigate from chapter to chapter (ie song to song) using |<< and >>|

  4. There are a couple of GUIs now for VCDImager that can make "chapters".

You will have to have your source file as one big mpeg, not several little ones.

I wrote an article on this recently here: http://www.geocities.com/medinotes/vcd/chapters.html

If you're not familiar with VCDImager and the XML scripting system, TSCV or VCDEasy would be a good place to start.

  5. Hi Michael,

I just wanted to thank you for creating these comprehensive yet easy to understand guides to xml for VCDimager.

I haven't started creating menus from scratch yet and I don't quite agree with you that a GUI approach (such as WinOnCD which unfortunately lacks chaptering) has to be more complicated than writing xml-files yourself, but even so it's helpful to understand the underlying concepts of VCD-structures.

I think you misunderstand me. I stated a GUI approach for creating VERY complex structures (e.g., the Demo VCD available at http://www.vcdimager.org ) would be as complex if not more than manually editing the XML.

For simple things, a GUI is of course easier!

This is simply an oberservation from experience. I have yet to see a GUI for a VCD authoring proggy that has both the power and flexibility of the XML script system AND being easy to use for large complex structures.

I hope to be proved wrong in near future? (hint, GUI writers).

    Regards.

  8. I haven't checked out the demo vcd yet because I haven't been able to get acceptable download speeds, but I will certainly do so.

As far as WinOnCD is concerned (which looks similar to Videopack 4 judging by the guide at vcdhelp), you can use this software to create fairly complicated VCD structures (with menus, submenus, etc.) as well, and WinOnCD's flow chart display makes this very easy. TSVC, on the other hand, is much more difficult to use because it has no graphical representation of the VCD's structure, so I prefer using WinOnCD for CDs with menus and VCDEasy for simple VCDs.

If someone could combine TSVC's features with WinOnCD's simplicity, I'd be perfectly happy, so I definitely support your call to GUI developers.

Actually, I was referring to VideoPack4. If you've ever tried making complex structures in it, its an absolute logistic nightmare. The Demo VCD probably has in the order of 50 or 60 separate items which are all linked together in some way or fashion. It would probably be impossible to organise well in VideoPack4 (and VideoPack 4 would probably hang too... it has problems once the structure becomes too complex).

If anything, one of the nice things is that text editors don't crash, no matter how big the XML file is...

This being said, there are a lot of ways that a GUI system like VideoPack4 can be improved and from some comments from people who have used VideoPack5, it appears that it might have to some degree.

    Regards.
