I have a new mid size SUV from GM with the Navigation system. The Nav system will not work without the DVD and the dealer's sell this DVD for $350 so any damage to the DVD is very expensive.
I can read the DVD on my Pioneer DVR106, but the disk is 5.3GB and Nero won't let me make a copy on the standard R- disc.
Any ideas on how to back this up ?
I will attempt to make a copy with some files omitted.
Do I need to buy a new double layer DVR when they come out ?
Other ideas ?

This seems like a interesting problem. Can you provide a little more info. Is this dvd completely data such as maps and such that the navigation system uses? Is there any video in it at all? You may be able to split the disc in half and put it on two dvdr's but im not sure how the navigation system would handle that. Any more info you can provide would be helpful.

The disc has the Maps etc for the Nav system.
I can see lots of files and one large folder all with .IHX extensions which are Intel Hex format files. I didn't look at all of the files to be certain they are all .IHX and I couldn't see any hidden files.
the disk file structure appears to be compatible with standard OS.
The system is made by Delphi and is read on the the same drive used for the CD player. this is part of the integrated Nav system and radio/satellite radio system in the dash. -
I seriously doubt the files are Intel Hex
If its a DVD9 with data instead of video it may not be possible. -
Great idea to bakc it up on the HD. Thanks !
I suspect the IDX files are for the Windows CE and JAVA OS's that run on the system.
I am concerned that there are hidden files on the disk...Oh well. I will do what I can. -
I think jimm probably has the best answer for you. If you compress any of that data the os probably isn't going to read those files. Unless somehow you can keep them in the same format. Only other option would be to try to edit out info that you don't use on the disc. Like if the system has audio streams which talk to you or maps of areas in the middle of nowhere. But I think your best bet would be to save it on your hd until we can burn dual layered discs.

GOT IT !
I saved all the files on the hard drive and then used NERO to burn a new R- DVD after deleting some of the files. I left the files in the root directory alone (about 1.5 GB).
After looking carefully at the IHX folder and files it was easy to spot that the long file names all had 001 to 008 in them. Later I also figured out what some of the long file names ment (like POI ment Points of Interest).
The numbers corresponded to the 1 of 8 regions they have divided the USA and Canada into (8=Canada). I chose to delete the West Coast and Pacific Northwest as I doubt if I will ever drive there and got the new disc to under 4.4 GB.
It worked fine in the car.
I haven't tested what happens if I try to navigate to one of the deleted regions but this is great.
My $350 DVD can stay home safe and my -R Ritek can stay in the vehicle.
Thanks to all for the help.
By the way the IHX files are Intel Hex format and are the data for the Nav system with 15 character files names corresponding to the navigation region, type etc. -
That's really silly. Intel hex is around 2.3 times the size
of the actual binary data . what a waste
They are text files , try opening one with notepad, you should see
:1000000AB348D45....etc on each line -
OK
Here is what I got
