  1. Is encoding speed dependent on CPU speed? It takes me about 3 hours to convert a 50 min+ AVI file to MPG format using cucusoft/TMPGEnc, so are there any tips to make this faster? I'm using a P3 550 to encode btw.

    Any help is appreciated

You are gonna struggle to improve this encoding time on a P3 550. You are correct - CPU is the main factor in encoding speed. All you could do is set the priorities in TMGPEnc to the highest setting and leave your computer to do its thing - no surfing or games etc. The other thing you might want to play around with is the motion search precision - drop it back a notch and judge for yourself if the decrease in encoding time is worth the decrease in encoding quality.
    If in doubt, Google it.
