I know what i'm doing basically with dvdripping overall, but need input on easily making this happen.
I've recently gone on vacation to mexico, went on a tour in the jungle & was using pulley & harnesses sliding down canopy lines - longest stretch 1200ft, highest height 800ft. anyway met a couple from my city there & we ended up splitting a DVD of us doing the tour. i ripped the .ifo and .vob (1045MB) files for myself, and gave them the dvd. got an email a few days later saying they couldn't play it. Probably the type of dvd player they have... i had a buddy @ work try to duplicate the dvd & his program reported a problem of some sort. anyway its so far just me that can read the dvd on our samsung standalone dvd player & my toshiba dvd drive in the computer. i'm looking to get them a computer copy, want it to fit on 1cd, and don't want to install a codec if possible on their computer - or one that would install automatically (assuming they would use WMP to view).
which codec should I use ?
or if anyone has any other suggestions I am very open to them, i do have access to a DVD burner, but do not have one myself.
thank you, and nice site, been great guidance for a long time.

You don't give any computer profile, which always helps, but how about VCD format? Not the best quality, but should be more compatible. I believe you also could convert it to WMP format in Movie Maker if you have XP. Not sure, don't use that program. The codec should already be there.

they have a "new dell".
their standalone dvd player doesn't work /w VCDs or SVCDs unfortunately. and their computer doesn't have a DVD drive either!
so far i've used flaskmpeg to get it into a divx5 AVI, video quality and sound are fine. tried to convert using the WMP codec showing up in flaskmpeg, and quality is ok, no sound which i thought was wierd... but the filesize was around the same as the .vob - just over a GB.
I can install a codec but would prefer if it was transparent... or anyone have a codec install that is a mere few clicks?
just looking for an easy way out to make them an easily playable movie for their computer, and any computer they wish to play it on. -
You could do it my way ....
Rip dvd contents
Create a .lst file for virtualmod
Then load that in virtualmod
Encode video using xvid compressor at 450 to 550 bitrate max
Use filter , add resize , resize to half width and hieght fields
(for me its pal 352x288)
Audio must be seperated and encoded into mp3
(I used mp3 at 32000 , stereo , I think thats 8kb per second)
When audio is encoded , you need to connect this to AVI , AUDIO
Either channel will do , second is normal , so dont add audio to first channel
Now save as OGM , and let it go ...
The reason to encode the audio first and seperate from the job is it has a habit of causing media player , bs player and others to crash after 5 minutes ...
So encode audio seperately , and add it in when ready to encode video , the audio dose not get encoded again , and is in perfect sync all the way to the finish ..
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trick : Copy encoded file to another directory on hard drive and rename the extension from ogm to mpg (mpeg) , good stuff , it plays .
Will be seeing how digitek and centrex home dvd players handle it or not in this form ...
Doing it this way should fit contents to 1 cd easily with reasonably good quality in playback (not recommended for playback on tvs above 68cm) , as pixelization distortion becomes more apparent .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have a help file for windows systems that I created , that tell's users how I converted whole dvd movies to fit onto a single cdr , and the quality wont cause you to go blind ...
All steps involved .
All involved programs are freeware .
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In either format (my way of converting dvds) wether it be mpeg1 or ogm you wish to use , the size is about equal ...
Thirteen ghosts , starwars - clonewars , tomb raider - cradle of life , and many more dvd titles , all fit 1 cdr ...
Since doing this I get alot of people wanting me to convert their old vhs tapes this way .
The most I have fitted onto a single cd in time format is 325 minutes , not bad with a little extra tweaking here and there ....
Should you want the help file I created , message me ...
PS :
The mpegs (not the renamed ogm files) will playback at fullscreen on p350+ systems .
The rename ogm files require P400+ to few fullscreen playback . -
