First dvd burner, pioneer dvr-106d in a external USB 2.0 case.
laptop is a Dell 8200 1.6g, 512m.
CD-r's burn fine on the 106d. Every dvd tried for video hangs at about the same spot (4-6%) during the lead-in write. I have re-installed Nero 6
multiple times, installed the ForceAspi, cleaned the registry. Nothing appers to work. Have to turn off the drive and kill the proccess.
But the same setup (106d external USB) on a desktop XP Pro and my
sons Emachine XP Home with the same installtion of Nero works fine.
Its driving me crazy. Last resort is to redo this 8200 from scratch,
which I dont really want to do after 2 years (maybe its time).
Any thoughts on what I can check ? I have the usual assortment of apps installed TmpGenc etc.
the ones that worked on the other machines are great. This is my sons first year in HS Marching Band, and I have all the competetions video taped and I want to make a dvd with them all on.
Any ideas much appreciated. I have made WAY to many coasters.
Thanks,
Rich

I'm running into the same problems with Nero 6 and have an open ticket with Tech Support.
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 8200 with a Bytecc ME-320U USB2.0 case enclosing a Pioneer DVR-A06. Media is Ritek G03 DVD-R.
I've found that I can burn successfully using DVD Decrypter. I can also recommend that you consider doing this. It was sent to me by a Nero engineer.
Download Driver-CleanTool.zip from
ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/Driver-CleanTool.zip.
Extract the zipped files onto your hard disk using WinZip or WinRar.
Run Driver-CleanTool by double-clicking it.
Driver-CleanTool will deactivate drivers that caused problems in Nero
in the past.
Confirm the deactivation of the drivers displayed in order to prevent
known driver conflicts from reoccurring in the future.
Of course, it didn't resolve the issue I've been having which is similar to yours. I hang at 1%, stopping about 60 seconds into the Lead-in.
Last, I'd recommend that you SIMULATE or TEST rather than write your next DVD to avoid another coaster. If the simulation is OK, then go for it. It's a little more time consuming, but much less expensive.
Anyone else?

I had this same problem as well, not just on a Dell, but all systems running variations of XP. Anyway, I solved it by not using Nero. I use either CloneDVD or TMPGEnc DVD Author to burn. As long as you're not using Nero to author, that should work fine.

Even though you're probably thinking "that's not the sort of answer I wanted", I have to agree with the previous post. I was a die-hard supporter of Nero (and still am, for other things) but will NOT burn video DVDs with it any more. Other software=no problems.

I must still have other issues - I tried to burn via TmpGenc dvd author
v 1.5.15.49. This time it got to 21% before the following error:
Writing Error.
Cmd:42,Scene:0,ASC:0,ASCQ:0
<click on button>
Internal Error: SCSI Error
New error on me. any ideas on this one ?
Im THIS close to redoing this whole machine over from scratch.
going crazy,

I had problems to but on my 105, every thing I tried it still did the same, it would start to burn and then fail during the lead-in, format your system and re-install Windows and the your apps, Pioneer drives don't like 'old' installations or multiple burning software.

Silly Question: you are running USB 2.0, correct? I mean on the laptop? Never assume because it's a new Dell, it's USB 2.0. In fact over 1/2 the new laptops Dell is currently selling are USB 1.1
A USB DVDRW and an Internal DVDRW are subtley different. the ASPI layer is different. Try Nero 6.0.19, it seems to not have the problems 5.10.x had with USB and new drives (106d).To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
You do realize that a PCMCIA card can't even come close to a USB 2.0 Speed? Hell, they can't do 100 Mbps Ethernet (they do 1/2 duplex 50 Mbps). Unless it's a double slot card, try burning at 1x.
Can you try the drive on a different computer? To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
Its a Dell 8200 with USB1.1, I have a dlink USB2.0 card that I use with it.
But same thing happens whether its 1.1 or 2.0 USB.
I am using Nero 6.0.19. I also tried to restore from a system backup and it wouldn't let me (another problem i guess).
I have a another 12g drive iam going to replace and reinstall and see how it works. If it works from scratch I'll reinstall the original drive and go from there.
I just wish I knew what its doing and how to fix it without a re-install. -
HOOORAYYYY!!! I've got mine working.
Here's what I did. Hopefully, it will work for you too!
Download and use the Driver-CleanTool and then the Registry-CleanTool here ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/cleanpack.zip.
Next use the General-CleanTool from here ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/General-CleanTool.zip.
Before you reboot, make sure you've deleted any old Pinnacle or Roxio folders in C:\Program Files\. Also, empty your Recycle Bin.
When you've rebooted, install Nero 6.0.23 from here http://www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php.
Run a simulation, and you SHOULD be in business.
I'm burning a DVD image at 4x right now!!!

OK, I have re-installed XP Home on a seperate disk.
Just loaded XP, SP1 Nero .23
and still the same thing - the 106d still hangs, I cant beleive this.
I've tried it on the USB1.1 & the USB2.0 card
I can burn cd-r's with it but dvd's still hang
I give up, its just not meant to be. -
well, it works now.
I had to upgrade Xh Home to Pro. After I did that, the USB1.1 port works.
Both for Nero & TmpGenc.
So I tried to use the USB2.0 pcmcia card (Dlink DUB-C2), and well, that dont work, just hangs too. Tried to re-install and use different drivers, no luck. Both external disks work fine off of it.
So i have a compatibitly issue with the pcm 2.0 card, but i can burn now.
Now i have to upgrade my old drive to Pro and try it again. -
Update:
I replaced the external case with a USB2.0/Firewire.
I know my Firewire port works because I can pull video from my
camera on it.
But now when I try to simulate a burn with Nero on the Firewire,
almost immediatly after it starts, it comes up with a scsi error in Nero and aborts. And the USB2.0 still dont work.
Case is a ME-320u2f that people have used successfully, am I plagued by this Dell 8200 ?
Basic error that seems to be in the nero log is scsi_hastat_request_sense_failed
I sawpped the 106d with a HD and it works fine.
wits end here, its not supposed to be this hard

I am having the same problem. Put my new Pioneer DVR-106D in a new Bytecc usb 2.0 enclosure and got "burn failed" with nero. Someone had mentioned clonedvd worked but that also failed for me. However I was able to do a burn with dvd decrypter. I had to do the burn as an ISO though. I don't know why that worked and not the others.
As far as my system goes.... I am conected to the USB port on a Dell Inspiron 5100, 2.8 GHz P4.
A couple of things I am going to try are:
1. Verify usb 2.0 drivers are installed (saw this on the bytecc instructions)
2. Unistall clonedvd.
3. Try what KingAdRock did.
I will report back on how it goes. (keeping my fingers crossed) -
Sorry to rip up old topics, but i have missed something about pcmcia.
gazorgan wrote here "You do realize that a PCMCIA card can't even come close to a USB 2.0 Speed? Hell, they can't do 100 Mbps Ethernet (they do 1/2 duplex 50 Mbps)."
Thats a new definition to half duplex also for me, but i wonder how i was able to transfer DV off a camera with firewire pcmcia? What is the total bitrate of PAL DV? And what is the maximum tranfer speed pf PCMCIA? All this about firewire and we could have used our FastEthernet cards all along, they are faster? Never seen a DV cam with ethernet plug, even if its 2 times faster than the requirements for DV?
