Is there a difference between TDK made in Japan and those made in Taiwan? I found a pack made in Japan and have not had any problems with them, but am a bit hesitant to buy those made in Taiwan.

I have a Pioneer A06 burner if that helps.

I'll eventually buy some Ritek or T-Y online in bulk, ut in the meantime I want to get some to hold me over until then.

    TIA

I don't blame you for being hesitant on the Taiwanese disks. I haven't had good luck with brand name disks from Taiwan. The Taiwanese TDK's I got didn't work well at all, but I may have gotten a bad batch--who knows? They were RichoJPNR01 id code.

If you just want some to tide you over for a while, look for the Maxell 2x -R disks from Japan, available at Walmart. Or the Fuji 4x -R disks made in Japan available at Best Buy. I've had good luck with the Sony 1-4x -R disks from Austria also, bought them at Walmart. All this is assuming you are in the US.

Cant speak for the other poster but the TDK DVD+R discs made in Taiwan are RICOHJPNRO1 and are good as gold . I have never had one fail from defects ( messed up a few with some authoring mistakes ) . I have burned hundreds of them from several manufacturers ( TDK , Memorex , Verbatim ) without a single write failure .
Keep it on the big cam !

From the tests I've seen, the RicohJPNR01's are not reliable. The good ones are very good, I agree, but you can never tell when you'll get a bad batch and I've been unlucky with them on more than one occasion. TDK and Memorex brands. So I've stopped buying Taiwanese disks at all---though I might try the Ritek G04's sometime.

  5. I use *ONLY* TDK DVD-R (2x) these days. Eventhing else has been giving me problem (that includes RiDATA from Meritline from a while ago, couldn't burn pass the 4.0GB mark). The "Made In Taiwan" ones are, believe it or not, made by TDK themselves and they're excellent, just read the compatibility comments, and really, unless you're prepared to spend a lot of $$$ on media, you'll probably end up getting something from Taiwan.

The alternatives I've mentioned in my first post are readibly available and good quality. I have no need to waste my time and money on the Taiwanese disks sold under the brand names. At least, not for -R disks. And if you're buying locally, they are no more expensive than the Taiwanese disks.

I haven't found a good source for +R Japanese disks, so I use the Verbatims out of Singapore. Perfect burns so far out of three spindles, but hard to find locally. If anyone knows a good US supplier for 4x +R Taiyo Yudens, I'd like to hear from them. Only one I've found wants over $2 a disk after shipping.

Thanks for the comments, good people. I can burn -R and +R, but my Toshiba 2600 will only play back DVD-R, although I do plan on upgrading that machine so I can play VCD and hopefully SVCD as well.

BTW, I the 5 pack of TDK I purchased seems to have been the only pack that was made in Japan. All the others, including the spindle packs were made in Taiwan. This held true for the Memorex brand as well (all 4 types). If I had not bothered to read comments on media brand/quality, I would have been buying Memorex made in Taiwan. I'll be buying some Riteks from Meritline sometime in very near future.

    Thanks again!

  10. FYI, reportedly the new 4x TDKs are in fact Ritek G04s. These disks under the Ritek name can be bought for $90 shipped (supermedia store, rima, mertiline). Good luck

  11. Those DVD-R 2X and 4X (not sure if all) are made in Japan but those DVD+R are from Taiwan. I am not sure who made the DVD+Rs but I heard many unhappy experience with Taiwanese made TDK CD-Rs (may be CMCs)...

    So if it is

Some of the TDK -R 2X disks are made with a TDK code I've tried a bunch heres a list.

TDKG02000000 Made in Taiwan (Very good results) 19 out of 20 good burns.

RITEKG04.... Made in Taiwan (Poor results) 8 out of 20 good burns even tried at 2X still bad results. I bought these at Staples when they were on sale for $7.95 a 10 pack.

MXL RG01.... Made in Japan (only burned one so far but it was perfect)

The TDKG02000000 and MXL RG01.... both had shrink wrap on each of the jewel cases inside the 10pk, and the RITEKG04.... had none.
