When I take a MPEG file and try to burn it with a Nero 6 it does not show up as an MPEG file on the disc after it is burned. I'm burning it as a DATA. I don't want it as a VCD. Is there a different setting or different way I should burn this? Thanks for reading this!

My dvd player plays raw mpegs burnt as a data disc. You will get more video on a disc burnt as a VCD though.

Hold your mouse over my computer details, above. Its the second player. They have to be VCD compliant mpegs though, i think.

I want to be able to send it to my wifes sister in Ukraine and I want them to be able to play it without any trouble on their PC. They do not have a DVD palyer and I am burning this onto a CDR. I did it before with the old Easy CD program that I had without any trouble. Any thoughts??

When I go to the file and right click and go to properties and look where it says type of file it just says file.

I also forgot to say that when I do the same thing and look at the file on my hard drive instead of the disc where it was burned it says under type of file Movie File (mpeg).

So the file doesn't even have a .mpg extension? If not, then what does it have, or does it have one at all? What happens when you try playing the file off the cd?

No it does not have an mpg extension. It says just what I was telling you. When I try and play it from the cd in a program like Windows Media it say file is not recognized. Is it the way I'm burning it? Should I burn it a different way?

  13. I had lots of trouble burning udf 1.02 data disks using nero 6.

I gave up and switched to Record now max 4.5 ( which uses the old Veritas prassi engine)

Nero has a problem burning mpeg data disks. I've burned several files that could not be read. Using same media, drive, and speed i have no problesms with Record now max

Save youreseld a headache. for this task record now max rules.

Does it play OK off your hard disc ? If you burn it as a data disc it'll be the same as your HDD copy.

It will looks fine and plays good from my hard drive. It's just when I burn it to a cdr with Nero that I have the trouble as it does something to change the file from a MPEG to something else. Is there a setting change I need to make? I hope someone can help me with this problem. Thanks!

You will have to post step by step what you are doing because I cannot get nero to drop file extensions.

  18. If you only need the file to play on the PC and you want to preserve the MPG format, you can try DeepBurner. It's free and it does data burning very well - at least for me. Resulting CDs play without prob on PC, but will not play on standalone VCD/DVD players.

I think Nero 6 gives you the option to burn data CDs too, doesn't it? I'm not sure, I've only used the trial version I have for VCD burning.

OK this is what I am doing with Nero 6 that I'm having the trouble with. Also look below because I found another post on the internet with someone having trouble simular to me. It said something about a "Media Check" but I can not find that anywhere in Nero 6. I already have the MPEG file created and it is on my hard drive. I start the Nero 6 software with the "Smart Start" and select "Data" then select "Make Data Disc". I drag the MPEG file over and select "Burn ". After the disc is done and I go to that file on the disc and right click on my mouse and go to properties under where it says type of file all it says is "file" thats it. Below is post I found with someone having a simular problem but I don't know what the "media check" is that they are talking about because I can not find it. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this and help.

I have nero 6 and have the VCD unreadable problem

I have used nero on 2 different computers using Winxp Pro to burn VCDs never over 24x speed and it works for some time, a few weeks or so then BAM it just spits out junk - you can see the VCD directories and dat file on the CD but it will not play - If you use a hex editor you find that the file is just random junk and not a mpeg file of any kind - Nero will still burn data CDs and Audio cds fine just not VCDs any more --- I had it do this on a computer that was only used as a digital VCR and had only a few programs for that reason - and it still did it - out of the blue even with no system changes

I had upgraded from Nero 5.5 in hopes of fixing this problem

I wonder if its a windows error

Nero will burn them now - I found out that its needs to have the media check left on - and when you burn tell it "not" to reencode and just burn - that is if its a MPEG1 file - A lot of DVD players will play MPEG1 files with different bitrates - and play them fine in VCD format

Dont know why but it does make a difference

with the media check off it places the file in the cue and does not ask any thing, it will burn, but not work - why - a bug ? its not changing the file till its burnt on cd, Then the file is junk and is not a MPEG file
