I am using instand dvd copy and I selected the titles I want to encode from the orginal within this application/encoder. The application encodes the selected DVD titles & the disk works just fine. All is well. (at least in my player)

But here is the deal. I notice that I can uncheck (not choose to encode) these small 10K titles (VTS's) on many of these DVD's. when I do this, the disk STILL works just fine.

So I was curious I copied these files (from the encoded DVD without the small titles VOB's selected) to my local hard drive, I then used NERO to burn a fully DVD compliant disk. I then get a warning message from NERO which says missing VTS_01_1.VOB file. If I continue to burn the disk it works just fine, just like the orginal disks did.

So what's up with this very small file? is a dumb file with no data just to keep the standard file structure in tact? That is, are these small 10k files sole purpose to just keep compatiablity with older DVD players and serve no playback purpose? (I can think of a similar analogy in the use of the folder AUDIO_TS which is created by many programs, even today, even though the folder has become somewhat optional at best.)

anyway... does anyone know about these small VTS, VOBs file's purpose? (strictly speaking is the VTS_01_1.VOB file/filename required?) How would you describe such a small VTS purpose?

    THANKS!!
