  1. Simply want to convert an xvid movie 640 X 380 (I think) to MPEG2 for DVD writing.

Movie Factory wants to stretch the video to 720 X 480 but I think a better solution would be stretch to 720 and appropiate height with "letterbox" bars top and bottom to keep proportions right.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked but after searching the answers don't seem to be specific for this solution.

    Thank you ahead of time.

  2. It's not going to stretch it, it's going to reencode it with that resolution. Since not all that resolution exists now it's going to interpolate, guess, etc to make it work. Kinda like if you increased the size of a jpeg, it's bigger but less detailed since there wasn't enough information inherently to give it that size.

  3. Thank you for the reply.

I realize the whole interpolation thing but still what I'm trying to express is that the original size to 720 X 480 is not the right ratio and stretchs the height which should max at 414 with black bars filling the top part and bottom.

I don't think you can use MovieFactory because the last time I played around with that program (it was MF2 then now they are up to a 3.0 version) it would stretch widescreen DivX/Xvid to full screen ... just as you are desribing.

The best thing would be to re-encode with a software MPEG encoder such as TMPGEnc.

    Do you have that?

    *** EDIT ***
What audio format does the Xvid in question have? You can run it through GSPOT to find out.

  5. Hmm, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. As mentioned above, I re-encoded my xvid movies with tmpg, picked Full Screen (Keep Aspect Ratio) and it went from 640x480 to 720x480 without any problems.

Well you did it correctly but as to what you were trying to say in your first post ... well it's beyond me.

    You were wrong.
