I have an .avi that is somewhat jerky but is otherwise pretty fair quality. Since the clip must be edited anyway, I'd like recommendations on what filter(s) to apply in Virtualdub before saving the new file. Specifically, please give me your opinion on:
1) Which version of VDub to use?
2) Which filter is most effective in smoothing out motion
3) Pros and cons of each if more than one can do the job
Also, any filters in TMPGEnc worth the extra time involved? I'm testing right now but would appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance.

I bet your sourrce was deinterlace. Leave interlace alone, and it should play fine.

Thanks for the reply, I'm trying to understand interlace/deinterlace and it's slow in dawning on me. Maybe I hoped for a short cut. :P
Anyway, after conversion of a short clip to MPEG2, the jerkiness is still noticeable also some color smearing, but I detect no lines or sawtooth edges. I'm starting to wonder if resizing might be the answer, instead of upscaling to D1, go down to 1/2 D1. That's one of the possible solutions listed in the detailed info on interlace/deinterlace you can get to thru the glossary. Funny where that can lead you! Gunna test that.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Shit, I have some reading to do.
First I converted and authored/burned the clip. Jerky.
Then I edited and saved the clip in VDub (no filters, full processing). Authored/burned. Perfect.
What the f**k? I have a nagging suspicion Lordsmurf clued me in, but it sailed over my head. :P But we learn by doing, right? Gunna figure this out eventually.Pull! Bang! Darn!
