I understand dts won't play on nondts players,but what about. If you get rid of the 2 channel audio and only keep the 5.1 audio,will there still be audio on a non-5.1 player.

According to the DVD spec all players should support the downmix of 5.1 to stereo. They are not required to support DTS as you stated.
