    Hello,

    Good Afternoon !

I need player(s) that will do the following:

    1. Blu-Ray Player
    2. Ability to play NTSC/PAL (must be able to upscale to 1080 TV) -- do I need a hack?
    3. Ability to play mpg/mpeg/AVI files (must be able to upscale to 1080 TV)
    4. Ability to play mp3 files from either a DVD (+- R/RW)

I was wondering how many players do I need for the above?

    Please advice.

    God Bless !!

Two. A Blu-Ray player and a quality DivX player like an Oppo.

I suspect the PS3 can do all of that. Over here it accounts for 85 - 90% of all BluRay players sold, and is the cheapest BluRay player you can buy.

That said, upscaling a 640 pixel wide, 700 MB Divx file is not going to do it any favours.

No standalone BluRay player can play AVI files. I agree with guns1inger that probably only the PS3 can meet your needs. It's up to you to do the research to be sure it can do what you want.

If you can wait a while, Oppo does have plans to put out a BluRay player eventually that should meet your needs but when is a good question. I have no idea if they'll put one out later this year or next year or even later. If you simply cannot wait even a few months, then you have no choice but to investigate the PS3 as your player. Oppo players are not cheap though, so you should consider that when they do put one out it will surely cost more than the PS3.

  5. At least one of the Blu-ray players recently added Divx playback. Or at least announced it.

    Here it is: http://www.divx.com/company/press/press_detail.php?pr_id=343
