For starters, Virtualdub doesn't convert avi to mpeg. It handles avi to avi and mpeg to avi. Use an mpeg encoder like TMPGEnc.

Open the unreadable file with G-spot and post the results. Is it possible that you ran a single pass encode but used only the multiple pass- 1st pass?

If you only made cuts and used direct stream copy on the video mode than my theory is out. Direct stream copy doesn't do any recoding. From the g-spot info I'm mainly looking for the 4cc used and whether you have a compatible codec installed. Another thing you could try is opening the unreadable file with Virtualdub and see if you get any errors and whether or not it displays the video.

  7. G-spot said I had 2 compatible codecs. I couldn't use direct stream copy because an window comes up saying video compression isn't active in direct stream copy

Ok, so you used compression afterall. Which codec did you choose? You didn't mention which 4cc your unreadable file has.

  9. The 4cc and codec on the file is Xvid

I think you did something wrong when setting up the Xvid encoding options. Describe your steps when you configured it. In particular, the "encoding mode" you used.

No, read a guide and learn how to do it the right way.
