  1. My buddy used Pinnacle Studio 8 to create a DVD. I want to use Studio 8 to reedit and add music to it.

Is there an easy way to capture from the DVD so I can edit? Perhaps this is a conversion?

  2. You don't capture DVDs you "rip" them. Check the tools section for things like DVDSHrink, DVD Decrypter and Smartripper.

You get a box, a stick, some string and some honey and when he starts eating the honey... pull the string.

  4. If it is a home made DVD it does not even need ripping (there will be no encryption on the disc), you can just copy the vob files from the DVD to your hard drive.

Like Craig said you can just copy the files if there's no protection. If there is, or if the files won't fit on a standard recordable DVD, use DVDShrink.

Yesterday I had a commercial DVD that DVDShrink wouldn't decrypt. I had to capture: DVD Player>TBC>Capture box>PC. It was Mona Lisa Smile and had some funky kind of protection. Twice I had ripped it with DVDShrink and my backup copy would go 6 seconds into the movie and keep jumping back and repeating the same 6 seconds. Weird.

I too had a similair problem, but then used DVDDecryptor to rip to hard drive...
I open the main IFO in DVDShrink via file mode, and shrink from there.

Works like a charm, and doesn't wreak havoc on my DVD drive

Very good, you're all suggesting the method for transferring the footage to PC but he didn't ask that, he wants to edit it.
Above anything the easiest way would be to effectively re-capture (by whatever means, ADVC-100 for me) but that would mean losing quality.
    The question is...
...will Studio 8 allow you to open the contents of a VIDEO_TS folder, much the same as it would a standard mpeg2 file.
Does anyone know, that's the question aquatic11 wants answering.
I have Studio, but no recently created VIDEO_TS files on my HDD.
I'll copy some across, try it out and report back aquatic11.

    EDIT:
The answer seems to be no, at least by my method of testing.
You need a program that'll will transfer the contents of a VIDEO_TS folder back into a mpeg2 file (which you can ultimately then run through Studio, edit and then re-author back to a VIDEO_TS folder (all ready for burning).
Perhaps these very knowledgble folks abaove could read the issue thoroughly this time and advise that program (that will create an mpeg2 file from a VIDEOE_TS folder)
I'd like to know the answer too, I know the program exists, I've read about it on this site I just can't remember the name.

  8. You can just drag-and-drop the VOB files from the DVD to a suitable place on your hard drive. Then rename them with the MPG extension. For example drag VTS_01_1.VOB and rename it VTS_01_1.MPG. You can then load them into Studio.

If there are several VOB files and you want them all as one MPG there programs that do that. But you can do it from a command prompt with the COPY command. Use the /b switch, and a + sign between each source file:

    COPY /b VTS_01_1.VOB+VTS_01_2.VOB C:\video\VTS.MPG

I don't know if it would work in studio 8, but I know the following makes a VOB "editable" by TMPGEnc: use Rejig in IFO Mode to demux the movie. By selecting the 1st VOB, it will demux the entire movie. You can then work with the A/V components seperately.... or.... 1st multiplex them with TMPGEnc wherein the resulting file seems to be considered a MPEG2 by pc.

  10. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have already transfered it to my hard drive. I can't get the program (Studio 8) to recognize it. I tried adding .mpg and it does not recognize it. I am still working on it. I also have access to premiere 6 and Studio 8 if that matters.
