  1. hi I just join yesterday, I have a question that nobody can seems to answer,
first of all, I dont have neither a dvd or a dvd player.

I hava a VCD movie that I wanted to extract/rip into my pc in avi format form since I notice .avi more smaller in size than mpg(correct me if im wrong).

someone told to copy n paste .dat and use vcdgear to convert it to mpeg BUT it turns out 600+MB!, is there a way to convert it to avi in compress form???

does the how to extract dvd, can be applied to VCD???

  2. 600 MB sounds about right.

You will find that VCD is about as compact as a lower resolution video file can get. AVI (As in DIVX, may be able to get it smaller, but only with a lot of work. I would just keep what you have. As VCDHunter said, 600+ is normal. You might study the VCD format under 'What is' to the left. If you really want to convert, you have some reading to do. If you only want to store it on your computer for viewing, maybe DIVX is what you need.

In general you're right, Divx (a type of compression used in many avi's) can compress better than a similar mpeg. Once you have extracted your mpeg you can convert it to avi using several programs. Look up mpeg to avi under format conversion in the guides section, over there <-<-<-.
