    Hi all,

I am new to this group so I'm not sure if this subject has already come up and I can't find the topic or what. Someone gave me a burned dvd with 4 movies on it. I know how to burn the basic cd movies but not make this kind. Could some one tell me in simple form how to do this, I would appreciate it greatly.

    Thanks, Michele

    Huh

Let me see if i understand :

You have a burned DVD (4.3 Gb) and want to put it on a CD (700Mb) . A 6 :1 compression.
4 movies (hollywood type) on a DVD is excessive.

    More info needed :
DVD is authored ? ie: plays in DVD player ??
Press [time remain] after starting movie(s) - How long is run time?

Possible solution. Put each movie on a CD using DVDShrink in ReAuthor mode.

This dvd I have is authored and I can play it on any dvd player. it has 4 ( ghost ship, darkness falls, the ring and thirteen ghosts) movies on it. It also has a menu where I can choose which movie I want to watch first. I want to use the movies that I already download, join the two parts and shrink it so I can fit 4 movies onto one dvd just like the one I bought from someone at work. I'm not exactly sure about the run time but if you tell me where to look I can check.

    Thanks again, Michele

    Michele,

What you wish to do is reasonably involved and will take some time and effort from you as well as a little bit of knowledge. It is probably not as involved as I will make it out to be, but I'm just trying to explain my reasons along the way. I will attempt to spell it out as simple as I can:

What you need to do is join the two parts together first, and then re-encode these into an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file so that they can be authored to DVD. The trick to putting multiple movies on 1 DVD is to re-encode at the correct bitrate. The correct bitrate is determined by the total running time of all 4 movies. You can find out the running time by loading the joined file into a program like VirtualDub and going to File Information.

Once you work out the running time of all four movies, add that together. Use the bitrate calculator here to work out your required bitrates. Make sure you use the toal time (around 6 hours I would think) and I would recommend selecting 192kbps for your audio. This will give you a video bitrate to use.

    1. Open TMPGEnc and exit from the project Wizard if it comes up. Load the first joined file into tmpgenc and load the DVD template for your region (NTSC or PAL). Hit the load button again, and go into the Extra folder and load the unlock template. This will allow you to change any settings you want.

    2. The first setting I would change is the frame size. Instead of 720 X 480 for NTSC, change it to 352 X 240. Instead of 720 X 576 for PAL, change it to 352 X 288. The reason for this is that a 352 X 240 @ 1500 kbps will look much, much better on a normal TV than 720 X 480 @1500kbps. Now change the bitrate to the value you calculated earlier. Close the settings dialogue box. Go to File > Add current project to batch list > MPEG File and specify your destination filename. Close the batch encode list and repeat steps 1 & 2 for each movie.

Once this is done, you should have all four projects showing up in your batch encode list. I suggest you run this just before going to bed or something like that because it will take a while, believe me ! (possibly a full day)

Once you have all of your ouput files you then need to author them. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author. From there you can create menus.

    See how you go.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks for the help. I don't mind that it might take a while to do this dvd, it takes me several hours just to encode it and burn it with nero. I has a few questions though. How do I join them together and with what. And if I get them joined what is the quickest way to encode them?

Thank you for all the help,

    Michele

Buying 4 movies on 1 dvd from somebody at work is highly illegal. Even If your co-worker owned the dvds to begin with, he can't sell copies of them. I'm guessing that if he put 4 on one dvd, they are probably mpeg 1 , that he illegally downloaded, which sounds like what you want to do.

He's more than that. He's an opinionated blowhard who doesn't know very much and apparently enjoys getting slapped around on public forums.

There are a number of MPEG joiners out there - Just do a web search and you will find plenty.
    If in doubt, Google it.

And does this really bother you that much that you have to point it out and explain it in plain English for everyone??

Those are all movies that are out on cable. I wouldn't waste my time with downloaded clips. Capture your own clips and convert/author/burn your own DVDs. 4-6 hours on a DVD using stuff you captured yourself is a snap and will look a lot better than anything you download and convert to author on DVD. You're starting with fucked-over aborted junk most times when you're dealing with downloaded movies, and by the time you get done converting them you've got fucked-over rebuilt aborted junk. Garbage in, garbage out.
