I bought some Asian DVD movies from this one website based in Asia but they would only play on my PC and not my Panasonic RV-31. These DVDs are NTSC so I don't know why they won't play on my standalone DVD player. Is there a way to back these up to DVDR to make them work?

With any that are SINGLE LAYER simply RIP with DVD Decrypter in ISO MODE READ and then BURN with DVD Decrypter in ISO MODE WRITE.
This will make a back-up that is REGION FREE
With any that are DUAL LAYER then you should RIP with DVD Decrypter using FILE MODE (SELECT ALL FILES) then process with a transcoder to make it "fit" the size of 1 DVD recordable disc. Popular transcoders include DVDShrink and DVD2ONE amoung others. There are also programs (such as DVDFab for instance) that will allow you to split the original DUAL LAYER DVD to 2 DVD recordables ... thus you loose no quality by compressing it to fit 1 DVD recordable.
Again this will make a REGION FREE back-up because when you RIP with DVD Decrypter in either FILE MODE or ISO MODE the REGION CODE info is stripped out creating a REGION FREE back-up.

I've tried ripping it under ISO mode and it still wouldn't play. I've also tried ripping under file mode and that wouldn't work either. Do you know what the problem might be?

make sure dvddecrypter is set to strip rce protection.
check out this guide for dvddecrypter settings:

So check it out let us know what you find.
But most Asian DVD discs are NTSC format.

Thanks for the tips. I was checking the settings on DVD Decrypter and I think it's set on removing the RCE by default. But I guess that's irrelevant now since I just ran it through DVD2AVI and it says "Pal." Grrrgh, and the case says "MPEG-2/NTSC." Now I'll have to go through the headache of converting it to NTSC, which I've never done before. How dreadful. Yuck!
Can you tell me how long that might take, assuming everything goes well (parhaps wishful thinking)?

Oh one more thing John, how come my DVD-ROM and writer are able to play those DVDs when they are PAL? I thought DVD drives can't play Pal.

Try this before re-encoding to PAL. Rip the DVD in file mode. Open the video_ts.ifo file in ifoedit, then under the line Video Manager Menu Attributes double click on where it says Video: MPEG-2 720 X 576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50), then change the standard to NTSC. Save the ifo file. Then burn, the DVD player should be able to play it now but the picture will probably be all screwed up (big green/purple blocks all over the place) but its worth a shot and won't take much time to do, maybe it will work for you.
It seems to work for me when I try make DVD-VCD with a PAL source(mpeg1 352X288 resolution) but gets all screwy when I use mpeg-2 720X576 resolutio. I have a Panasonic RV-32 DVD player nad live I'm in Canada. Maybe it will be easier to if just convert to mpeg1 352X288 resolution using tmpgenc keeping it in PAL then author using TMPGenc DVD author, you'll take a big hit in quality though. -

Matthew,
I tried changing it to NTSC in IfoEdit and then burned it. It played but on my RV31, but as you might expect, it was really screwy and had those green and purple blocks. I guess I'm gonna have to go through the headace of converting it to NTSC the long way after all. Thanks for the alternative method though. -
Well you can try converting it to mpeg1 with TMPGenc PAL DVD low resolution settings then authoring it and then changing the ifo file to NTSC, it'll probably work fine on your DVD player but like I said you'll take a huge hit in quality but it'll be easier than converting PAL -> NTSC.

I think I'll give it a shot at converting it to NTSC first to preserve the quality when I have time. Then if it's too much trouble then I'll try your method Matt. Thanks!
