I have burnt quite a number of DVD backups and up until today have had no coasters. I have always used the same media and the same settings without an issue of any description. Today I have had 5 burns abort during the lead-in. Any members out there who have experienced the same problem and have any idea what is causing the problem. The only thing new is DVD Decrypter which I believe improves the back-up process. Thanks to members who respond.

  2. I don't know anything about but DVD Decrypter, but if that the only thing that's different it's probably the problem. Try it using your previous method and if that works, you've found the problem.
If it works, don't fix it.

  3. I had this exact same problem with a pioneer A03 and A05.i tried various different types of media and my usual ritek dvd-r discs just to make sure it wasn't the media as it was failing to write duruing the lead-in-sent the drives back to supplier to be tested and it turned out that the drives were faulty.i've found that with pioneers this problem occurs just as the drive reaches the 11 month old date-just hope it doesn't happen with the ao7 i've got now.its not your media or software that is at fault-its your writer

To see if it's your drive vs "backup software":

    - Try burning a Data disc. Use a regular data burning program like nero. Use something like 2GB worth of random files. See if the burn process works.

    - Obviously try other types of discs (to make sure it's not a disc issue. Although personally I doubt it).

    - Hardcore solution: Remove the drive, take it (and Nero) to a friends PC, to confirm that it isn't a hardware problem. (Note: It's really less of an ordeal than you think. CD drives are rather portable )

The last solution is obviously the best, because it provides a quick, and straightforward way of determining if it's *your software* vs the Drive itself.

No sense going through the giant pain of searching for a software error/conflict, if it's actually the drive itself that is a problem

Thank you all for your responses, appreciated. I really didn't give the actual burner (Pioneer 106D) may be causing the problem. Of the first backups I did 'no coasters'. I was backing up again when without reason I got 5 coasters in a row, it certainly came as a shock. The only change I have made is before using DVD Shrink I used DVD Decryter. I loaded that application because of all the good things I have read about it, previously I was just using DVD Shrink. I have read hundreds of statements regarding the reliability of DVD Decypter and all of them only had good things to say not one negative remark. All 5 coasters aborbted the burn during the lead-in. I will go back to the way I was burning in the first instance and see if the problem returns. If it does, I will have the burner looked at. The comment about the ASPI layer might also be a clue I will also check that out.
