  1. I have a Panasonic DMR-E80H and I've hooked up a number of different VCRs to it. My $80 Quasar mono VCR has very little audio hum when hooked up (this is noise you can hear when a tape isn't even playing) - it's very acceptable for backing up/archiving. However, I've hooked up some more expensive VCRs ($125 hi-fi Panasonic, a $275 Panasonic SVHS ET VCR, even a $1,300 dual VHS/Mini-DV JVC deck) and those have quite a bit more audio hum. I've tried different cables, checked if they were near magnets, etc. - I have no idea why these more expensive decks put out such a louder hum... even when set to normal (not hi-fi) mode. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

  2. If you're getting the same hum from different decks and your cables are all good, my guess is it's a ground loop in your electrical system. You may want to try unplugging as much as you can from any outlets on that circuit as a test. You could try testing your outlet with a multimeter or get an inexpensive ground tester for your outlets.

I had some buzz problems in some files. This took care of it, for the most part:
