    Open the avifile in G-Spot. That will tell you what codec you need.

    also every time i add an .avi it says:

    improper VBR audio encoding in the source .avi file then it says it has to skew from the video stream

    i just did.....

    i get this for the audio codec:
    0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3

    and this for video:
    xvid

    i have both codecs installed according to gspot

    audio path is:
    (S) --> AVI Splitter --> MPEG Layer-3 Decoder --> MatrixMixer --> (R)

    video path is:
    (S) --> AVI Splitter --> XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder --> (R)

    if thats any use.

    Don't use VirtualDub to convert audio. Set audio to direct stream, then "Save wav". If the audio in the AVI is mp3, then use CDEx to convert to wav. (VirtualDub might add a .wav file extension to the output, but that's simply not true - just rename it back to .mp3 if that what it is.)
    ...or load the AVI in GoldWave and save as wav. That's the simplest way to get the audio as wav out of an AVI.
