I made a backup using DVD Shrink with deep analysis mode for both disks.
For both disks, keep the menu (for scene selction) and only one audio track, the choice is yours but i went along with 5.1 Dolby Digital EX.
Use Titleset Blanker to strip out the warning screen which appears at the beginning of each disk. the warning screen is located on the 2nd titleset (VTS_02_1.VOB) on both disks. this way, we you play the movie, it will play the menu directly.
Using DVD Shrink, i couldn't really tell any difference between the original and the backup in terms of quality. i cant remember what the compression percentage was cos i did this a while back -
I did the dvd shrink, both disk compression aprox 75 %, only one audio, 2 subs and no extras, looks great, can tell the difference on my TV (only 25"), sounds great.
Did not remove the warning screen, and still works great.
Thx for all the replies,
isn't there a guide to, how much compression equals DVD quality, SVCD, VCD, VHS etc. ????????????????????????? (the 75% i did is vervy acceptable, but when to I burn the x-tra DVDR.....?)g_i_l_s_t_e_r

To save some space you can also cut start of the movie (with the company logo). Another big source of "free" space on some disks - menu transitions and motion menus. Transitions can be replaced with blank and big motion menus could be also cut. DvdReMake can do all these.
Quite a few disks don't need any transcoding after such editing.http://www.dimadsoft.com - home of DvdReMake and MenuEdit tools -
There is no need to shrink any of the video if you want a 2 disc DVD copy of extended - here's howI did it with 100% original quality.
Disc 1 -
Demux the Vobs with MP2 and AC3 Audio only by chapter point (DVDDecrypter or whatever) - do not select the last chapter.
Remux, rebuild IFO's and burn - 100% original quality.
Disk 2 -
Demux the last chaper from disc 1.
Demux all chapters from disc 2 except the last chapter (large end credits as somebody has already mentioned).
Merge, remux, rebuild IFO's and burn - 100% original quality.
A bit of hassle I know - but it's good to get a 100% copy of the high quality, high bitrate extended film with 0% loss in quality.
PS - Works for the Two Towers EE as well without chopping chapters !

oops - meant to say MPG2 (Video) not MP2 (MPEG Audio....) in the above ...
