  1. Hi all,

I just have a quick question

The source are capture by canopus ADVC-100 ( so it is AVI ), I want to encode to either xvcd or low resolution DVD via TmpgEnc

Both will be encoded at 352x240 and both bitrate @1850 CBR.

Which will be better quality in the final ?? Or they are the same ?

    thanks all.

Same resolution and bitrate will give the same quality.

no, SVCD is 480x480, right? where tmpgenc's dvd low res is 352x240.
I don't know what bit rate tmpgenc will want to use when it does dvd low res though.

I also have a similar problem.
I have several videos captures that I want to put on DVD. some are SVCDs, some are XVID at 640x480. I know neither is up to "DVD quality", prob around SVCD quality. But I don't want a big stack of SVCDs, so I want to put them on a DVD disc that will be playable.

so with TMPGEnc, I don't know if I should choose 'low res" DVD or regular DVD

FULL READ of the 1st q. helps!
x-vcd extended bitrate vcd (not non-standard svcd) in this case.
    some are XVID at 640x480

You should use 1/2 D1 res for your 640x480 and 480x480 res encodes. (1/2 d1 = 352x480. you will be VERY pleased with the results, even with bitrates as low as 1800-2000 will look great, go higher if you feel like it too.)
Suggest load the dvd template you want, then UNLOCK it, (Load>extras>unlock.mcf)
Then manually set the bitrates and res @ 352x480.

  6. oh, I was somewhat confused since the subject mentions SVCD yet the messages mentions XVCD

anyways, my questions was talking about SVCDs
I have some SVCD video clips that I downloaded.
and I have some XVID clips that I have previously encoded.

I was just wondering about what the best resolution is.

I never thought of 352x480, I'll give that a try.

but since my clips are 640x480, will that translate to 352 well?
I remember hearing about square pixels and rectangular pixels, etc, but I it seems to always be alittle hazy

  7. It will translate perfectly. The mpeg will resize during playback. The same way 720x480 will resize to 4:3 or 16x9 depending what the video contains.

note that AFAIK 352,480 supports only 4:3, so if your content is letterbox 9svcd movie will be) then leave it letterboxed. Just resize and encode!

    Cheers.
