  1. After converting a video to MP2 using TMPGenc it plays back rather jerkily. Infact it seems to play fine when it's a normal scene but when it's mostly black it seems to be jerky. The annoying thing is that it plays fine on the PC but doesn't like my standalone DVD player (Fusion DVD-811). The audio continues to play fine during the jerks.

A good example is on the file (An episode of 24) it jerks through the into, through the splitscreens and shows the first frame of the clocks but doesn't change until the next scene.

I was fiddling with the TMPGenc options and the changes i think could cause this are either bitrate (8000) and my player doesn't like it or the GOP Structure (I=1, P=4. B=1 IBPBPBPBPB). The size of the video is not a problem but i do want the highest quality i can get.

The two most likely culprits are field order or media.

1.) If you are using PCM audio try a video bitrate of 7500kbps instead of 8000kbps. If you are using MP2 or AC-3 then 8000kbps should be ok.

2.) Don't mess with the GOP just use it as is.

3.) Try different media or a different DVD player. If it is a media problem then most DVD players will have issues. It could also be that your DVD player just doesn't like recordable discs that much and/or the specific brand of media that you used.

  4. I tried reducing the bitrate, resetting the GOP structure and i know that my DVD player doesn't mind this media as i've used it before. Still jerky whenever the screen is mostly black. It just seems like such a weird problem!

Decided to just chuck the field order idea altogether? Well, good luck anyway.
