Do both these types of ritek have the purple dye?

Yes. G03s are 1x disc that burn on some setups at 2x. g04s are 4x disc.

G03's in Europe are advertised as 2X and G04 are obviously advertised as 4X. I've also occasionally seen G03's listed as 1X in the U.S. but not sure why. I'm using G03's right now in my LG4040B @2X and typical Ritek....not a single coaster yet.

You can't judge a disc by its colour.
AFAIK, at the moment, ALL -R discs have purple bottoms, not that it makes any difference to your hardware which doesn't "see" like you and I do.
Some discs have darker bottoms than others, but you can't tell a dye just from that, I'm afraid. -
Yes, I had some Zero Defex discs with purple bottoms, total junk.

my pioneer 106d will will only burn ritek g03's @ 1x w/ official firmware.. is there a difference in firmware between euro pioneers and US pioneers?
