I've started to convert all my old movies/clips from whatever format they are to MPEG 2 and burn them onto DVD-R. I use TMPEGEnc Plus 2.5. for that and usually it works really fine and gives me great results.
There are however some files that are rejected by TMPEG, it won't give me a reading error or file not supported etc, it only says that TMPEGEnc has encountered a problem an needs to be closed ( + asks if I wanna send a report to Microsoft). Then it closes.
Other files are 'not supported' or 'cannot be opened' - what can I do about that ? I've already done everything the trouble shooter guides suggested. (changing priorities in VFAPI-Plug in, etc)
any suggestions ?
are there acceptable alternatives to TMPEG that I could try ?

If your troublesome files open ok in virtualdub, you could frameserv them to TmpGenc. Look in the giudes for further details of frameserving.

I have had the very same problem, & it appears the glitch lies in the fact that TMPGEnc only accepts AVI files in MS type 2 format, but it imperfectly accepts type 1. Some of the time you can just do everything over again, the same way, or close the prog & reopen several times & it will work. Not a very good solution, I know.
The workaround for me at present is to convert the AVI file to type 2 with the tools available here on this site, or capture at Type 2 to begin with. (preferred)
changing the order of the codecs is also recommended, I would follow the advice of lordsmurf.com.
Good luck ! -
Hey again, I had comp problems and couldn't do the AVI types conversion until yesterday. I tried several programmes, but didn't find one that fit the purpose.
What's a good programme to use to do that conversion RWANDREWS ?
Thanks -
EXACTLY what type of files are you trying to encode? If capturing to AVI then converting, use Microsoft's DV App to capture as TYPE 2 AVI, then you should have no problems. CANOPUS has a AVI type 1 to type 2 converter, but it has not worked right for me.
There is a plug-in for MOV files specifically for TMPGEnc, you'll find it in the tools section, as are the others.
Follow the moderator's advice for frameserving if you use Virtual Dub already, as I don't know jack about that Program.
Hope that helps. -
I've succeeded in converting most files the way you described. But there's one .avi file that plays without any errors on the comp, but even after frameserving with virtualdub, tmpeg enc. refuses the 'video.vdr.avi' it and gives me 'InterConnect = O' followed by the 'cannot open' error.
I tried changing the priorities in VFAPI-Plug in, but it still didn't work.
I used this guide : https://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve.htm
Suggestions anyone ?
